dressing table request
Happy New Year to all Forum users.
Has anyone out there made a dressing table? My wife has asked me to build one for her, she wants drawers or cupboards either side of a knee hole, probably shaker or Arts & Crafts style. I've got a couple of ideas but I wouldn't mind a bit of inspiration!
Thanks a lot, all the best
Pete

Hi Pete,
For the 'internal workings' side of it, the best person to ask is your wife. She would have her own specific personal collection of items that she'll want to put in there, so design the drawers/shelves to fit it all just right. Does she want it to match the other furniture in the room? That makes the external design part easier. For inspiration, if you want the trad. styles, check out some of the famous brand name websites like Grange & others. Your wife will probably know exactly what she likes if she does some searches on-line or in magazines/books.
Cheers,
Jill

Pete,
A dressing table is usually very similar to a desk. At its simplest, two small chests of drawers connected by a common top. Dresssing tables are usually a bit smaller and 'lighter' than desks, thinner legs, etc.
Try a google search for either 'dressing table plans' or 'desk plans', and you'll probably find something she likes. Most on line plans are pretty reasonably priced. You can follow them to the letter, or use them as a guideline.

Thanks 2 Jill & Tex.
The request for a dressing table came as a result of my wife saying she had too many handbags and needed some storage space for them. Guess what my initial reply was!!

Lol, Pete - maybe you should get her interested in woodwork of some description, and she won't care about the handbags and will want more tools....and you can simply build a tool cabinet to house them!!!
Sorry that I didn't have some links to good sites or something for you - I tend to find most of my inspiration in my magazine cut-outs.
I'm looking forward to seeing your finished dressing table, and I'll be really interested in what you end up building - our 13 y.o. is going to build herself one, soon, and also I am helping our 10 y.o. to build one once we fin. the house in a few months. They've designed their own, pretty well. The 10 yr old loves birds, so we are thinking of incorporating either pyrography (free-hand - she is really artistic - as are all our kids) or marquetry/veneer work with birds on the door panels - depending on what we do on her bed ends, as we'll make them to match.
Cheers,
Jill
