    Default My drum sander cart

All the machines in my little shed are on castor wheels so I can make a bit of space to work. My new drum sander needed to be on a rolling cart as well.

    Great Job!!!
It looks as though what you have made is "original equipment". You have thought about how you will use the machine and stored everything so neatly.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Thanks for this compliment chambezio, much appreciated. I learnt a lot of what would be needed after using a larger drum sander at the local Men's Shed. A shelf or side table for holding boards to be sanded was essential. The centre drawer holds the sandpaper strips for winding on the drum, plus the rubber blocks for cleaning the drum paper. The lower, larger drawer, is where my ROS and orbital sander and bits and pieces are stored.

The manufacturer's infeed and outfeed ate meant to be bolted underneath the conveyor belt to the sander body, but you need an open frame to access these bolts, whereas I have a solid table which makes it impossible to do.

Jet are a bit anxious about the 50 x 25 RHS under the belt. They recommend nothing goes there. Initially I had it standing on edge, leaving only 3mm clearance to the underside of the belt, so I turned ot on its flat side. Getting the welding done so the RHS was dead flat after being screwed down was a bit of a nightmare. Took it to a professional fabrication shop, and they had three goes at it, and I am still not 100% happy with the job they did, but it works.

    Hi Dengy,
Where did you get the 39 mm ply from. I think the job you have done is very good work.

    Crocy.
Hi Croc, my wife has a cousin who is a contract cabinet maker and installer, and he had this off-cut from a kitchen bench top that I was able to put to good use. Not sure of the exact thickness, 37- 39mm

That looks very professionally done Dengy. You have thought it through very well.
Did you make up the steel frame yourself, and the in/outfeed table tops, or are they part of the original equipment?
    Top job!

    Thanks for these comments, Treecycle.

I designed the steel frame, got it cut to size, and my neighbour welded it together.

I purchased the infeed and outfeed tables, complete with bolt on legs and side adjustments for leveling the table. Unfortunately, only the top section of each table, which you see here screwed at the sides to some 20mm ply, were able to be used because I did not used the Jet skeleton frame sander table which allowed you to access the legs of the infeed and outfeed tables from underneath.

I did have one of those frame tables from Carbatec, same design and same steel sizes, so I added some castors and put the drum sander on it, and at the first little bump the front legs buckled, like a horse going down on its front knees.

I think the infeed and outfeed tables, as purchased, were intended to be permanently bolted on to the drum sander, but this would take up too much space in my shed.

Space is at a premium and as you said it needs to be used at it's maximum. Good job on the modification.
