Extending dining table. WIP
Hi, first time I've started a thread, so hope it works.
This is an extending dining table I have been working on for ages.
It stretches from 22 inches (closed) to 13 feet.
The "mecahism" is a copy of an 1830 version I saw on the NET.
I simlified to legs to tapering ones as I can't turn legs and I really didn't want a fussy look.
The wood is Malasian Red Cedar
I am now making the top out of 13 one foot wide boards, then I have to decide how to finish it. Any suggestions?

Sheesh! That's a ripper! Talk about starting out with a Bang!!
Please do post more pictures!!
A finish - If you want to keep the natural colour - something like UBeaut's White Shellac.
I'm sure others can suggest other, maybe more appropriate finishes.
cheers

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Thanks all,
Will post pics of the mechanism as soon as I defeat my phone which is refusing to download any more pictures.
<O
The extra leaves (slats) will be stored separately in a set of bookshelves, which I intend to make, which will have a cavity in the back. Probably in the Gothic style as I have made a couple in the past and they have worked out reasonably well. I call them Harry Potter bookshelves. Very popular with nieces!
<O</ORyan, I was not going to put aprons on the extra leaves, as the design I am copying didn’t, but you have me thinking that there may be no reason (except storage) not to.

Terrific work, Bob.
Although you are new to this board, I doubt very much that you are new to woodworking.
Keep the great posts coming!

Hi Bob,
Great project! How are you going to make the top expand/contract; ditto the side rails?
Cheers!
