    Default I finally made something

    HI all

Well, this was a really difficult job for me. Not because it was particularly cunning joinery, but because the specs kept changing.

    The story:

My wife wanted me to build a coffee table that displayed a Hard Rock Cafe display case she bought, which was really meant to be hung on a wall.

My initial idea was something like this which she liked:

So away I went. Cunningly, just before glue up I thought I would show her what it looked like in the flesh. Well, needless to say she didn't like the whole idea of having the display stand up, and wanted it in draw.

Now, this was all made the more complicated by the fact that the display case she bought didn't have a single square edge to it. I've never seen anything quite so bad. One edge was bowed by about 5mm, and even the depth wasn't constant.

So, off I went down the draw path. It wasn't until I got some way along that I realised that the display case was not going to be long enough to reach the front of the draw.

I'll fix that I thought, and made a little extra storage tray that fits between the display case and the front of the drawer.

Great, all problems solved. Well, not quite. I didn't leave enough room so that the badges in the display case would clear the top of the drawer cutout when pulling the drawer in and out.

    Oh well.

Finally finished it and she says "That's not finished - I want it glossier than that!". This was after three coats of satin poly followed by three coats of gloss. In despair I hit it with some Feast and Watson's gloss that I had lying around.

Anyway, FWIW, here are the pics:

    Thanks Wongo.

It is Lilac, with a stained She-oak tray, and a Jarrah drawer front.

Very nice, Wongdai. I like the feature in the front of the drawer.

Firstly I want to say very nice work.

Now getting back to the real deal. I laugh so much at what you said on your work in progress.

Well the real person behind the work. Do this, no do this, no do it this way, ok let go back to the original plan. Ok how about this.

Now the question is does the other half read this?

Very nice piece. It's difficult when the spec keeps changing, isn't it...
