Finally finished my grandson's cot
It's taken me a while and I've had a few dramas, hiccups and distractions along the way but finally finished it off today.
Made from very well seasoned (read expensive) Jarrah and finished with Ubeaut's Traditional Wax.
My daughter absolutely loves it but I reckon the little fella loves it more - he has already test run it this arvo and gave it the tumbs up.Regards,

Nice work Pete, where did you get the plans from, they look similar to the one that PlansNow sell. Did you M&T the slats to the top & bttom rail or use another method?
If I do not clearly express what I mean, it is either for the reason that having no conversational powers, I cannot express what I mean, or that having no meaning, I do not mean what I fail to express. Which, to the best of my belief, is not the case.

Slavo,
Yep it's a version of the Heirloom Crib that come from PlansNow but I made a few changes to suit myself.
No M&T's as there are too many - sort of did it the way they suggested - but again with a slight variance and came out really good - main thing is to try and use filler blocks from the same piece of timber if possible as it blends in really nicely once sanded back and polished.Regards,

That looks brilliant - where did you get the drop down brackets - I am trying to find some concealed ones for a similar cot. I was planning to finish it off in beeswax as we are a little worried about young gums chewing away a toxic finish. And... where do you get those plans from ? Forgive my ignorance !
Thanks

Cots galore!!
Hey Big Pete
It certainly looks great - marvellous job!!
I have now been requested to construct a cot for our 2nd grandchild (due April -better get the digit out) - did one for my son before he was born years ago!
However, things have changed quite a bit since that time - namely Australian Standards etc wrt cots. I am having trouble sourcing the fancy catches and concealed latches etc that appear to go with modern cots - Cabinet makers suppliers are pretty limited in Cairns and they all raise concerns wit Aus Standards and therefore don't carry the stuff.
Pete, where did you get your catches etc. I made mine years ago but don't want to go down that road again.
I guess if the cot is to be sold at a later date it will have to meet AUS Standards anyway.
Anybody out there that can help with these bits and pieces.
Great forum and great to meet like minded types - good on ya guys
All the best

Wallace,
You can get the cot hardware from Carbatec in WA (dunno if Qld have them) and also Beenatree Crafts used to stock them but dunno if they still do http://www.ubeaut.com.au/beenatree.htm as there is no mention of the items on the website now - maybe an email to them may help.
As far as I am aware this one complies with the Aust standards. It will also stay in the family that's for sure.
I am also in the throes of making another one as I have another daughter due in early May.
Bit p***ed off at the moment though as was using my ML-392 planer/thicknesser again today (for this cot) and a bloody chain gave way at the joiner link so now have 'another' hold up till I can get Carbatec to sort me out with a new one. Took them ages last time to get me a bearing so will wait and see how long it takes this time. Not happy Jan that's for sure!!!!!!Last edited by BigPop; 1st February 2005 at 09:41 PM. The Second Cot
Hi again,
Our second daughter & her husband are due to have their 1st child and our 2nd grandchild in May so just had to make another cot.
Made it on the same design as the other one out of really well seasoned and 'expensive' WA Jarrah - made a few 'subtle' changes from the other one - used Traditional Wax again.
It also has come up a real treat and now have go for a 12 hour drive to deliver it but then that gives me a good excuse for a visit too I s'pose.Last edited by BigPop; 4th March 2005 at 07:17 PM. Reason: Sepllign mistooks

BigPop,
Your work looks outstanding!
I'm soon to tackle a cot myself - for my upcoming bundle of joy. I've got until September to have the cot completed, but I'd prefer not to cut it that fine.
My tools are relatively modest, with no jointer/thicknesser at my disposal.
I really like the look of your cot, and one done by Whitey sometime late last year. I have no plans and would appreciate any asistance anyone can provide.
I've bought a matress as it seems most dimensions revolve around this size. The one I've bought is 1290mm x 685mm.
A local, helpful and very friendly timber yard has run me through some of the DAR timbers they sell, and I really like the Tassy Oak. I've rubbed down a little sample with some Tung oil (my intended finish) and it looks good.
Now all I need is some advice and I'll be whipping up a list of timber to order in no time.

Nice work, Pete.
Grandchildren provide excuses for all kinds of woodworking projects. You'll have to think about a rocking horse soon.
