    Default Hall table

Latest project. A hall table in red gum, white oak, and glass. This replaces a second hand office desk return in laminate

I try to choose a skill to improve on each piece. This one involved my first attempt at tenons.

Finished in wipe on poly, I wanted to burnish oil but test pieces came out too dark and obscured the grain features.

    Very interesting design.

Did you sketch this out before you started your piece?

thanks Christos. Yes, i have an electric whiteboard that I managed to grab for $50 which is awesome for sketching . It was big enough to do a 1 to 1 scale then print and send to mates for criticism and comment.

The final changed a bit from the original sketches. It was initially going to have curved, tapered legs with the rails of the bottom shelf being through tenoned through the legs. as it was my first tenon attempt I chickened out on this and made a blind tenon.

The tenons through the top shelf were going to be square but they looked like bad joinery so they were changed to have rounded corners so they could be rounded over into a feature.

That's awesome. I normally just use a piece of scrap paper and if I get visitors that ask for the sketch, I normally locate the scrap paper on the floor. I think the white oak bottom shelf with the little over hang on either side is a good idea.

But if I did that I couldn't justify buying a new toy to SWMBO
