    Default A Small Hall Table

    Hi all,

This is a hall table which is about 1.4m x 1.2m x 0.2m. It has a frame made from American Hard Maple and a top made from American Black Walnut. It was made especially for two friends of mine. The finish is Hard Burnishing Oil.

200mm is very narrow. How stable is it?

Very. Had it sitting in my lounge and on the workshop floor for weeks before delivery, didn't fall over once, despite me pushing it! It is very stable. Maybe it's more like 250mm. Can't remember.

    Regards,

    Rob

Is the dark mat part of your design or just serendipity on teh part of your friends?

I am also concern about the width being quite narrow for the height. Then again you have already tested it under trying conditions.

Nice, simple design. Width looks fine for the position, it ain't going to fall over.

Heavy legs and a light weight top help overcome the balance issue with a shallow table.

I like the contrast in timber, the construction looks simple but still adds to the placement of adorning the area, pertaining to perhaps the Asian approach to small neat & simple gives a modicum of decorum without parallel.

    Hi Ian,

No, the black mat was not in the picture while I was making the table. It arrived after the table was delivered. To me, the table is well balanced and the choice of Walnut and Maple has given it life. I had actually thought it would go into another part of the house, but I love it just where it is. The chap I gave it to is suffering from some advanced cancers. This was to cheer him and his partner up.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Hi Rob

Like others have commented your table is a nice clean design which for me is nicely set off by the mat it is standing on.

So simple and clean. Very few people slide along my walls to deliberately kick over such furnishings.

If anything, there's a place for my keys, the post/mail, my mitts, my hat and all the other crap that we need to use up here in winter.
To get into the house/ to get warm. To unwrap all the winter trimmings. A secure place to put the rubbish of winter.

One trick if the table is likely to get loaded =
Tip it all over and run screws through the matt into the bottoms of the legs.
That will lower the center of gravity by a lot. Like it is glues to the floor.

I have lots of experience with snowy winters and the clothing, etc which goes with those.
