    Default Huon Pine Coffee Table

    G'day
I thought it about time I tried uploading a photo
So heres our Huon pine coffee table
I had no chance of getting a matching base so I tried this , it looks like its floating in space
    It measures 1000mm x 600mm

    Default Very beautiful!

    Hey, Garry.
    It's awesome!
You can see the beauty in simple things. I like it.
But... did you think of another bottom?

Yes I was trying to think of how to do a timber base which would look like it belonged there, but came up with the clear base idea and decided to try it
The bloke I bought it from said it orignally had a Huon base but it was a bit flimsy and was broken by removalist and he no longer had the pieces ( Who would chuck away bits of Huon pine ? not me for sure)

I like the clear base as it takes some of the bulkiness away from it. What is the base made from?
Like you, I couldn't throw away a piece of Huon and that is a fair chunk.

The base is made from 10mm clear acrylic sheet
Holland plastics were best of the 3 quotes I got on it

By having your location as Australia I have no idea where you are and who you were comparing quotes between. Maybe you would want to update your location, but that is up to you.

Beautiful piece mate. What finish did you use, and how was it applied? I love live edge furniture and have tried a few things but can't get a finish i'm happy 100% with.

    cheers.

I was told that it had only ever had bees wax on it , so that is all that I put back on it after partly stripping it back
It was badly marked and had been knocked around when I bought it , so I rubbed it back a bit with wax remover and 0000 steel wool
I was not game to try and remove all the marks as I was concerned the colour which has developed over the years would disappear
It was even more red when I got it
It must have been in strong light to get that dark I reckon as I was told it was about 8 years since he got it from mill
and I have a tv unit I built also 8 years ago and it is a lot lighter in colour
OR is the difference only due to the way it was cut ????????????

The wax I applied I just rubbed on and then polished it , hard work but / Melted real bees wax in this case

All my other pieces are now done with Organoil HBO and then with organoil wax after trying a few other products

Beautiful timber. Yes, the colour of Huon as it ages varies with the cut and end grain tends to darken more because more of the natural oils exude there. i would not normally have an acrylic base but I agree that it allows the beauty of the timber to stand out and makes the timber of the top the feature.

It looks much the same BUT
I am nearly finished a huon wall clock which is looking real good and that has me thinking of stripping the table back and refinishing it with danish oil
