Default Inspired by the tree - a dresser

    Hi everyone

We finished up the dresser we have been making just in time for Valentine's Day! Took longer than expected actually. It's for our bedroom to put the video/DVD/TV on and for Tom's undies/socks etc (maybe you didn't need to know that bit).

It is made from a variety of timbers - camphor laurel drawers, red gum top and flooded gum legs (I think). The fixtures are all hand forged - from the curly drawer pulls, to the leaves extending from the top of the "branches" (not done by us - it's too bloody hot in Brisbane to do blacksmithing - but Tom did do one of the leaves and I did another at a blacksmithing event near Toowoomba a couple of months back!).

The back two posts are meant to represent sprouting tree branches. They look a bit odd without the TV on top, with that blank space in between in this photo. I was going to run a twisted branch in between, but changed my mind.

A bit different I guess. We used mortice and tenon joints for the most part.

I reckon the worst part of woodworking is hauling the completed piece up the stairs and putting it into place. By then my energy is completely zapped.... The best part is applying the finish (in this case Danish oil and wax) - it really brings out the colours in the timber and comes alive!

    Cheers
    Danielle and Tom

Great stuff as usual Dan & Tom!! Are the drawers dovetailed...you didn't use M&T's on them did you?!!
I'm sure your jocks'nsox will smell mighty perty after a spell in the camphor drawers!

    Cheers,

Mmmm, I can smell the CL at my desk here at work, oh hang on, sorry that's Neil's vase I have on the desk

That is *The* *Best* *Dresser* I've seen for ages. I love the sprouting twigs - actually, if you don't put a TV on it, maybe a mirror there perhaps???

Hope you enjoy looking at it while recovering from moving it upstairs!

    cheers

Great camphor drawer fronts - no moths in there. Also my favourite finish. Nice work.

Wonderful shimmer in those drawer fronts and just love that redgum.

Interesting rustic unit - well done Dan and Tom.

Hope you waited a good enough while before you put the wax over the oil.

Top work on that, love all the different colours coming together even with the varying colours of the camphor.

You might want to start building some lighter things for a while

    Fantactic work

The two post would look nice holding a mirror, and you can make the frame out of branches, and carry the iron leaves to the frame also. Just a thought

Thanks everyone! Andy - the drawers weren't dovetailed (and definately not mortice and tenons!) - we used housing joints I think they are called. It's the ones that you slice out a bit of the timber with the table saw and half of the timber is left to join together (maybe a halving joint?). I really should find out the proper name or ask Tom!

Now that I have put the TV on it and the DVD/video in the slot underneath, it doesn't look so funny. Junkboy99 - great idea, but having the mirror behind the TV now is a bit wasted.

    Next projects.....there's a long list:
    - coffee table for wedding present (April)
    - cot, change table, dressing table - all that baby paraphenalia (am putting that one off....until critical time)
    - chest of drawers for spare room to replace dodgy ones we made a few years back
    - got some cast iron theatre seats - need to make the actual wooden seat bit
    - shelving for my pottery wheel/kiln set up downstairs
    - trolley on wheels to put scrap timber in
    - picture frame for brothers' painting

    Etc etc

    Cheers
    Dan

Once again - work that I would love in our home, Dan & Tom! Love your unique, rustic but finely finished work with great attention to detail.

    Default Dresser

Cant beat solid timber showing off its natural figure and grain characteristics. Love the hand forged leaves and hardware; boy, you could combine that with so many woodworking projects!
