Jacko WIP
Finally have time for something other than utilitarian woodwork (and moving interstate, new shop, etc.)
This is the first part of what will be a floor mounted, illuminated book display stand. Shows some heritage to previous designs but a bit more ambitious. If there is interest I will continue to post as work progresses (assuming it does!)

Are the legs solid timber or laminated? Could you detail your bending process please?

Legs are tapered laminations, four off. Thy are approx 6mm going to 3 mm. Timber is woolybut, 1.5m long
Glue is West Systems epoxy, less than 2% Spring back.
Steamer is a secondhand electric urn ($10 on eBay), Chamber fits directly on top inclined at about 10deg. Steam time 30 minutes, used a hot air gun while bending using a SS compression strap. 100% success rate.
I made sure that timer was 1/4 sawn to limit any grain separation.
If you need anything else, photos etc.cando.

Photos of your steamer setup would be great.

OK photos attached. I usually drape in old towels to help maintain steam. Another image shows an alternate form of steam box using fibreglass panels from caravan construction supplier that was used for another project. I note that there has been rather a lot of misconceptions re steam reported.
1) Because of the large amount of latent heat of evaporation present heating temps will NOT vary from top to bottom of the box, it's 100 degC (at least at sea level!)
2) There is no significant water penetration even after extended times, if this is doubted, cut a cross section after say 1 then 2 hours!
I have also include an image of the bending/glueing form with the compression strap visible in the foreground.
Hope this is of interest/use.
Ps can extend the length with just anothe piece of downpipe and you should note the supports to keep the "bender" in the centre of the box, allowing steam "all round"

Hi Jacko,
I really like the look of this piece I am sure you pleased with how it is coming along.
A question with the process to make the legs did you bend each lamination then when dry glue them or some other method?
Regards Rod.Rod Gilbert.

Yep, more or less! Steamed and bent the tapered laminations , then, when dry sand lightly on a spindle sander to both ensure a transverse flat surface and remove any oxidation for good glue adherance, put them back on the form used for bending, glued and clamped. Now working on the base, just a bit tricky, another post to come.

The base is now roughed out! Lots of bandsaw work plus some pretty scary routing!
Now the hard work of finishing will start

Looking real good so far Jacko a very interesting build. Is you're steamer just down pipe attached to the urn. Looking forward to see the finished piece.

WIP Part 3
Wasn't going to post again until a bit more progress, but as it's coming along just as imagined, couldn't resist! This is fully dry assembly cause I need to break it down agin to provide the socket for the curvy bit that will carry the LED lighting. Makes for interesting design getting the wiring through fully hidden!
Apologies for the rotation!
Jacko
Ps will only post again when real progress is made!

I am also very interested to see how that will be done.

A Little more progress
There are a pair of wires in grooves between the laminations. They exit at the top underneath the support. Th also carry through the base to a termination strip, and from there another cable carries the power to a socket accessible from the top. I will try for some detail photos when next in the shed. In the meantime, attached is progress to date. The base is now fully glued up with the sockets to accept the laminated beams no fully formed and integrated.
My apologies for the multiple images, was trying to rotate image before uploading but a) not accepted and then de-rotates and b) cannot find how to delete before posting! Am I stupid or what?

Anybook
Could be a first edition Caxton Press or a family bible to. I sold a couple to a keen book collector in Sydney, so thre is a (niche) market.
