Default Jarrah dining table & chairs finished

Just got the project finished prior to Easter. Well not quite ,as I have to build two more Jarrah chairs as the first one was in mountain ash and the second in Blackwood. Suggested to SWMBO that the different woods were attractive , for some reason she wants them all the same!

As a beginner at this game, have learned a lot about hand tools, adhesives and Jarrah during this project.

Decided to build the table top on edge, as with each plank weighing 11.2KG, found handling to be a problem.

Made some heavy duty adjustable feet using 1/2 wit nuts and bolts.. work realy well .

Finished top in Tung Oil and base in Danish Oil.

Just knock up a couple of chairs and still have a lot of jarrah to use. Not sure what to make next.. no doubt i will get my instructions from a higher power!

    Cool Breathless....

    Oh...that is supurb.....

Wish I could handle the heavy Jarrah!
What an absolute pleasure to see such work!

I'm salivating at just the site of this woodwork.....
Do the "higher powers" whisper .....send all woodwork west!

Would love to glean some of the knowledge you have on jarrah.....I have heaps & also marri....don't know if I can use it all....will just have to bite the bullet & learn....it's not the actually building....it's mainly the maintanence of machinery...& actually the brute strength needed to move it....LOL...that's why I work with pine....when I shout out "Lord give me strength...." I really mean exactly that!

    Thanks for showing your work...

Love your work Paddy. Those chairs really do look great.

I would also like to hear some of your construction details, and some more photos.

If you make some more Jarrah chairs to match the others, the odd ones out can always go in the spare room and be bought out if needed for extra guests etc.

    Paddy,

Truly glorious work. Did you design these yourself?

Beautiful work Paddy. I'll bet you only want to move that table once.

Did a post on the "Jarra Dining Chairs" on 21 jan in "Woodwork general" this follow up post was relocated from same thread.

Don"t know much about Jarrah execept it's b...dy hard and moves a lot. Ended up doing most of the work with handtools. Only used the router for a final clean up with a couple of mm to remove.

Was amazed that one 1/2 ' bandsaw blade from c&s cut all the chairs, still can't believe it.

There was about 5 to 6 mm cuping on all the planks used for the top. As well as up to 3mm bend along the lenght. Hand fitted each joint and built up the top, bonding one plank at a time. got quite fast at making the joints by No 5.

Then hand planed flat at 45 degrees to the grain. Resorted to hand scrapers for the final finishing as the Metabo duo O/R sander did not have much effect. Only used the sander from 400 grit onwards with the Tung Oil.

Top was dead flat after finishing. applied 3 coats of Tung Oil top and bottom, still flat. After working the top up to 1000 grit noticed that the top had cuped upwards about 15mm across the 1100 width. Think the heat might have reduced moisture content !!! big panic. slowly returned to flat over the next week.

Did 'nt know what I was letting myself in for !!
