The hinges themselves provide the stay (if you make'm right!). One half rests on the other at around 100 degrees. I made a design mistake by making the red gum lid insert thicker than it needed to be. It is very heavy, and if it went back too far it tipped the empty box over. The hinges are therefore supporting a quite heavy lid.
Yes, they are glued in about half their thickness.
