Knife in Sheoak
Hi all , just wanted to post a pic of the last knife i made using some nice sheoak that i picked up from Dust Eater through the market place (thank you David).
I stabilised it first with cactus juice , hand sanded to 1500gt and then gave it a light buff on the wheel , thanks for looking , cheer's , AB

Nice one
Why stabilise though? No need to stabilise solid hardwoods like sheoak but perhaps it had some rotten bits?Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Hi dai sensai , no rotten bits but 2 reason's i guess , first it help makes it that bit more moisture resistant and the second is i get a much better finish on the timber with out using epoxy type painted on sealers , maybe i'm on the wrong track here but i sort of figured that if i can air out of the timber and replace it with resin then that must be a good thing , i have also stabilised ringed gidgee and have noticed that the gold hues in the timber really pop in the sun light.

Exceptional.
Why is there no Knife section of the forum?
I know of a knife making community here in Canberra and also I met one chap (member mattm82) who showed me some absolutely unbelievable examples he made.

It would be interesting to weigh timber before and after stabilisation and see how much has been taken up (after removal of surface build up). My guess would be very little, especially in Gidgee, but stabilisation may help a bit with avoiding the metal sandings going into the timber grain. What ever works for you, the knife does look good
Is the black stripe a resin layer? Also, where did you get your blank from?Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Did you make the sheath also? The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

i keep a log of everything i stablise including the moisture content , @ 6 % moisture the scales both weighed in at 77gms each prior to stabilising then after the surface had been lightly sanded @ 120gt one scale was 85 gm and the other was 88 gms , the black strip is a 1.0mm G10 spacer between the gidgee scale and the tang , i think you mean knife blank ? , no blank was bought , i made the knife myself from W2 tool steel bar

most of the hard woods like gidgee , jarrah , minnerichie , mulga and myall normally increase in weight by an average of around 10% but sometimes as much as 15 , i don't sell knife blanks as such but have sold a few finished knives like the one above and take the occasional order , i make knives as a hobby not as a business , i started a facebook page about 6 months ago , Sinclair Knives Australia , glad you like the knife , thank you , Mark
