Default Nearly finished - Barrister's Bookcase

A little while back my daughter asked for a book case to house her growing collection of books. I let her work her way through some magazines I had to find something that she liked. Also visited some web sites. She settled on the Barrister's bookcase from Australian Woodsmith. The timber was to be blackwood. The images below show some of the progress,

The first is of the raw timber. As with any rough sawn timber you don't know what you have until you start the project. I feel that blackwood is a little worse in this respect as the colour and figure change in the one plank. Quite often I will rough dock to size before dressing the timber. In this case I gave each plank a quick pass over the planer to see what I had before marking out and docking.

Next image is showing the resawing stage.

The whole bookcase is modular and each top piece locks into the case below. the third image shows the base with a top cleat for locking into the case to be placed on it.

The sides and tops required two pieces to be glued together to obtain the required with. The next image is of the top being flattened after the glue up.

The fifth image shows the base of a case with an opening for the top cleat to fit into. Here a bullnose is being put onto the edge pieces of the base using the router.

The next image is of the finished cases waiting for the doors to be fitted.

The last image is of the finished bookcase, just waiting for the toughened glass to be delivered.

    Very nice!

Tell me more about those doors, I assume they swing up? How do they stay in the open position?

    It looks excellent Bob.

I think you need a lot of blackwood for a project so you can do a reasonable job of matching the boards.

Are we supposed to believe that you flattened all the panels with that plane?

Hadamona - The doors have a small steel rod fixed to each top side that runs in a slot along the side. At the front off each side, just under the door when slid back, is a similar pin that the door rests on. Trick was not to have too much play in the runners or the door can jam when being moved.

Scally - If you want . The two boards used to make each side were jointed and thicknessed prior to glue up. The plane was just getting everything flat when the glue had dried.

Very nice Bob. I've always admired barrister's bookshelves - wanted a set for ages. Lovely job.
