    Default NZ Kauri cabinet WIP

    Hi there,
This will be showing the making of my NZ kauri cabinet,
The timber was from Matt and his very generous of a small slab of Kauri the thread can be viewed hear. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/wh...timber-122351/
Basically the cabinet is about 700mm tall and 400mm wide the main frame is made from the kauri and the panels are made from a matching timber.
Since I have a 2 month time to make it i will probably be posting often.
If you like you can leave a comment on what you think of the progress or any thing like that.

    Regards Ben

    Hey Ben,

you may need some other bits sent down, if so give me sizes for rough sawn and I'll send you what you need, I have a lot of this wood and I am happy to see a few more bits go to your project if you want to keep it all in Kauri might make walking down the hall easier too as every free spot is chocka with wood (serious addict)...Aussie post is a drag though as they have max length around 1015mm

I hope you really enjoy your project mate...

    Thumbs up

Like the general design and will be watching with interest!

Just a thought - do you think the legs would look better if not so chunky.? say a taper on all four sides?

Looks pretty good to me. I think it will look better in the flesh than in the drawing. Look forward to seeing WIP.

I will send you a PM tomorrow with some sizes, probably don't need to much. To let you know the slab arrived today at the post office. It starts tomorrow .

Got the wood from the post office today well packed.
First thing was to have a look at the design and see what part of the slab would look best in what spots. As you can see from the first cut that it is very nice timber.

Started to make the fount panels by band sawing a strip 50mm wide then planing it and cutting it in to 18mm for the rails. You can see by the picture that there is sort of figure that looks like flames.

In the picture of todays progress you can see the fount panel rails and side panel rails. On the bottom of the stack is what will be the top it will be bandsawn in to three and then glued together.
    Regards Ben

The first picture is of the blackwood veneer for the centre panel and the second picture is of the door panels made from ply.

To make the top first the large square had to be dressed all round and then cut in to strips on the bandsaw.

After cutting the side panels I had to make all the dowel holes with the drill.

Last week cut the biscuit joints and glued the top there will be more pictures when I have put the panel thought the sander. Have ordered some blackwood for the legs as it will match the middle of the panels. And Matt I sent you another PM.

Today sanded the top with a wide belt sander.
Will be making the legs when the blackwood arrives.

Have been doing some more work over the past few weekends. With matt not sending back a PM i went with black wood for the legs.
    Made the draw and doors.
Did lots of routing for the panels.
Glued up the sides and doors.
Will be continuing on with the work as it is near complete.

Looking good Bupton, that blackwood veneer looks great.
The time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
