    Default Offcut storage

I have been meaning to build this for ages, finally got around to it. It makes use of the dead space behind the fence of the drop saw bench. It's 2.4 metres long and 400mm deep. There are 5 partitions creating 6 bins, each with a flat bottom and being about 200mm deeper than the one on it's right.

The bench itself is a torsion box - very flat and strong.

The whole thing is made from 13mm chipboard cover sheets scored for free from a joinery, plus a few bits of resawn oregon 4x2 scavenged from a building site. I'm planning to put a cupboard under the bench at the left.

Nice work silent. I have a couple of bins for off-cuts too. The trouble is I can never use them fast enough so they are just keep piling up faster then I can use them.

Some of those off cuts are older than my daughter

Yes it's a bit of a problem deciding what to keep and what to throw out. But as I pick up nicer bits of timber, I gradually weed out the rubbish. So one day, when I'm 65, I'll have nothing but cabinet grade timbers in there. At the moment, there is everything from bits of pine and ply through to white American Oak and red cedar.

At the very least, it saves the stuff piling up on the floor until I decide what to do with it.

    Novel idea!

I was a tad concerned about storing upright, ala Bunnies, but I guess that if the lengths are short enough and packed in tight enough it's not a concern.

Certainly takes up less footprint and more accessible than when laid flat.

Great idea, have a greenie. Now to find the time to make one for myself. I reckon a compressor would fit nicely under the boxes too.

Yes I think even 1200 is a bit long for storing like this. I'm going to make some horizontal racks to take the longer stuff. Most of this stuff has been stored in drums like the ones under the bench for the last 5 years or more with no noticeable bowing. But to be honest, at least half of it is really firewood anyway.

Yes I reckon it would. I didn't think much about what to put under there when I made it. If the front and back had been stepped rather than sloped, it might have been more practical for storing things. I've just shoved a short drum and a milk crate under there in which I keep interesting small bits of nice stuff like burl or highly figured stuff that will be used for boxes or handles or whatever one of these days.

    Cheers.

I hear that. I can't really comment... pot calling the kettle and all that.

Great idea SilentC! Timely for me too - was just wondering the other day what to do with those offcuts in a shed rearrangement.

Great idea and use of space. Your off-cut storage area is about the size of my new shed! I better not have any off-cuts.
