Picture frames and natural edged mirror
These were easier to make than the cabinet....the two paintings together were requested by my sister. The ballet dancer is hanging in our lounge room.
The mirror presented an interesting challenge in that I wanted to make the sapwood contours "frame" the mirror. Because it wasn't straight, I had to make a straight line and then the 45 degree mitre cut from there. Wasted a bit more of the timber (but since it was an off cut anyway, it wasn't so bad).
Finished with oil and wax.
Cheers

Hi Bob
I used timbers from the pile out the back (now that's specific isn't it?). The timber around the picture frames was tongue and groove flooring (that reject stuff from Lismore with black epoxy filling any splits or knots), run over the table saw to rid of one side of the groove (which creates a nice lip for the glass and back to fit in) and the tongue gets sawn off the other side.
The mirror is a piece of Sydney red gum I think. It was split off the side of a bigger slab which we used to make a coffee table for my Mum and Dad.
Sorry I don't know the species!
Cheers

nice work, Dan-- i especially like the efficient use of the sapwood as a striking eye-pleaser there.
i had bought some hi-figured cherry for a project, and it really bugged me to have to trim off the sapwood for the continuity of my design. you used it all here, in a neat frame that "works". nice touch...
frames are a quickie project favorite of mine . hmmmmm, i think i've just got a new idea for one. what's that they say about flattery and piracy?
