For a good oil finnish, try Sam Maloof available from your nearest Rockler store. Both the poly/oil and the oil/wax (used afterwards) give a great finish.

Great job Alden, novel modern adaption to a sidetable.
Well done."Last year I said I'd fix the squeak in the cupbaord door hinge... Right now I have nearly finished remodelling the whole damn kitchen!"

Nice work mate, but I'd opt for an oil or wax finish rather than a stain, It would be a shame to spoil the look of that beautiful timber.

ok, here's the latest batch of pictures. I took two of pretty much each angle, one with flash, one without so you can get a better idea of the shade of the wood. Today we spent about four hours figuring out how to make the drawers, for my first time doing dovetails I'm pretty happy, but there's definitely room for improvement. Right now the drawers are simply dry fitted, but tomorrow we'll likely glue them up. Other work done includes the biscuit joints on the legs and aprons and the curved rail is now glued up. Also the table top has been planed smooth but not cut to size yet.
I didn't really calculate the time required so now I'm hoping that by next thursday when the shop reopens all the outer pieces (legs/rear/sides/front) will be squared up to each other so it can be assembled. Then all that will be left is to cut the cleats for the top and making the sliders for the drawers.

latest update
well it is almost finished...we've got it all together now, it just needs a final sanding, finish, and some hardware...it's got it's share of flaws due to both my wife and I being complete novices, but we're happy with the results.

Alden,of course you realise now that you have posted on the www you & your lady will have to consider giving the air force base a miss and go out on your own and start a WW shop.
Seriously tho some good work done and what now awaits us with your next venture along the woodworking line.
Keep up the great work.
Always a pleasure to hear of a guy sharing his WW interests with his lady.
cheersJohnno
