my first picture post
hi everyone, I'm new to the board and have only posted a question about redgum so far, but I thought I'd post my meager productions thus far.
the first picture are the first projects that my wife and I did as part of the training class on the airforce base here. Took about a month working on it 3 hours a week and they came out pretty nice for a first time I'd say. The wood is western maple, we've left them unstained as we live in an apartment and don't really know where we want to put them when we move so we'll have to stain them accordingly when the time comes:
this second set of pictures are the latest project we've started.

there is the link for the plans I am working off of, they have a few issues and have required some ingenuity but overall they are pretty straightforward. The plans are for a coffee table, but I am not building one of those right now at least, instead I have made the depth of the table about half of what the original plans called for, and made the legs approximately twice the length. This will serve as a hallway table. The top is still at the shop, but the rest of the parts are laid out:
the top of the table, the legs, and the sides and backs of the drawers are all african walnut, the rest is out of mahogony (can't remember the exact species). Those few pieces of maple that you see (lightest wood) are the cleats for holding the table top on. We're still not sure what we want to do for the hardware, and I'm also debating whether or not I want store bought drawer slides or if I want to make them out of wood.
today was the third day I've worked on this, bringing the grand total of working hours to about 6 so far. The shop doesn't reopen until thursday of next week but I hope to at that point be able to joint all the sides and legs together and then get started on dovetailing the drawer. If all goes well the thing should be close to ready for stain by next saturday. we shall see.

Its nice to see a component breakdown for a change. The tables look well made and are ideal for a young family with moving to do.

Great work. I particularly like how SWMBO allows you to work in the living room when you don't have access to the shop. I might try that here and see if I live.
Boring signature time again!

Coming along nicely. Looking forward to seeing the project as it progresses.

Nice stuff, Alden. I never knew there was a place called Olympia in Western Australia.

thanks for all the responses, the first project was one of three options we had for the class we were taking so the plans were already in place.

Nice work.
You might give some thought to using an oil finish in lieu of a stain. I build my projects in pine and spend a lot of time staining it to try and get it to look like the timbers you have used.
Try the different finishes on some scrap wood.

thanks for the tip, I've never stained anything before so any advice is greatly appreciated, I will look into the oil finishes.
