Pine bookcase
A mate wanted a hand to make a pine bookcase.
He said it would only take about half an hour??
It took a bit longer.....
It had to fit in a space in an old terrace house and over a high skirting board.
It will be painted.
The shelves are in stopped rebates. They are glued and screwed.
6mm ply is glued and pin nailed to the back.
The smaller base is to lift the case above the skirting board.
A thick rail is fitted on the top at the back so he can anchor the case to the wall.
Height is 2450mm
Width is 780mm
Depth 300mm.
He also thought that he could take it home inside his car?
I hope he brings my straps back!Scally

Yes, I guess he is a mate.
I did have a bit of fun ordering him around like a new apprentice.
I am in no position to criticise what other people put in and on their cars.
But it was a bit funny trying to squeeze it inside his car.
We moved his roof racks as far apart as possible then tied it down with wide straps. It was nice and secure.
The height was to fit in an old terrace house. They have high ceilings so this will go close to full height.
Without the base it will fit in modern houses with lower ceilings.
I checked the Sagulator and the shelves shouldn't sag noticably. They are in rebates and glued and screwed. We nailed and glued them to the back panel as well but I doubt if that will do much. After you push a few books agains the ply, I think the glue will let go.
The only worry was the big bottom shelf so we rebated an extra support for it.
He did bring his Peruvian cajon around for me to check out.Scally

Now that's a lotta books! I doubt that the ply will come unstuck at the back!
Nice job.

It will probably look fine shutdown, once he paints it white and it is fitted between a fireplace and a wall.
Thanks Artme, Maybe they are gentler than my girls.
I need to make a couple of decent bookcases myself so it might be the incentive I need.Scally

Peruvian cajon
Hi Witch1
I make cajons every now and then.
That is why I was interested in seeing one made in Peru where they are the traditional drum.
Here are a few that I have made.
They are a lot smaller than a bookcase but sound a lot better.
You sit on the box and hit the front or back to use it like a drum.
Cheers.Scally
