A spectacular piece of timber for the lid. Banksia? You have used a really nice background to photograph the box. It looked a little 'outer space' at first glance, but assume it is a flecked Laminex or stone kitchen bench top.
You should be very proud of your efforts.

Thanks Alan. I went back to the thread where i asked what species the timber was and there were two repliers who thought it was Banksia so if you are positive I'm happy the puzzle has been solved. The box is Flooded Gum which i chose because i thought it would match the Banksia when finished, and I'm glad it did.

The bench top is solid Galaxy Granite.

DD, I'd also bet on Banksia.
    Nice work!

Don't you just love medullary rays!!

I am backing Banksia as the culprit!

Not all Banksias look quite that spectacular, although all have the medullary rays. In some species the rays and the vessels are so close in colour that the rays do not show very well. The same goes for the botanically unrelated but similarly medullary-ray-exhibiting sheoaks (Casuarinaceae) some of which are stunning timber and some absolutely boring.

The Banksia is becoming a theme. The first one is a Tas Oak box with a Banksia book matched lid. The second one also has a book matched lid. The second box is made from an unknown hardwood that came to my work as a pallet. I am surprised at how well it came up and I have a few more pieces left. This material was perfect for making hinges out of as well. The feature in this led was supposed to sit centre but on close inspection I found some cracks so had to cut them out.

Thanks guys. The one big difference between these and previous boxes is I now have the router table set up which gives a much wider scope on design. Bloody phone cameras pick up minor blemishes and fitment issues that are all but invisible to the naked eye.

Thought id try a little basic inlay work. Tas Oak box with a Flooded Gum lid. In the picture the lid has come out very Red but in reality is a nice Brown.

Really nice work and use of the grain to bring in some drama to the overall look.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Technique is getting better with each example so i thought id try some strap hinges. They turned out well so i will keep using them.
