    Smile My first project

This is my first woodworking project.

Bit of more than I could chew and as a result took a long time to complete, and almost gave up once or twice!!!!!!!!

Came across this BB some 2 months back and seeing what you all have been completing inspired me to finish it.

Was looking to darken the wood and as a result I posted a thread awhile back asking about blackening blackwood. Overwhelming response was not to and so I didn't. I am very pleased with the end look and so is SWMBO and therefore thankyou all for the solid advice.

Let me know what you think. To put the workmanship into context I have no previous background in woodworking, I push a pen for a living!! I have had a freind tell me what next to do when I got stuck and thats about it.

    Cheers

    Pete

Looks great , and don't you feel great as well. The joy of looking at a finished job and thinking I made that.
Unfortunately i'de say your hooked now so there goes your spare time , and extra cash cause you always need another tool.

    Keep wooding

That's a big job for a first effort. Congrats.

Now you'll be paranoid about people marking it.

Well done. You have a licence to spend more money on tools and wood . It just gets more expensive from now on.

Well done Looks good to me. I'm sure you take pride in telling visitors you made it in the future, and so you should.

Take time now to think about what went wrong (if anything) and how you can avoid it on the next project. I'd love to say it gets easier, but usually you take on harder projects.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys for your comments.

Nothing too much went wrong, biggest hassle was managing the tear out when using the buzzer and thicknesser because of not allowing for the grain direction, then spending time mucking around trying to tidy it up using the same tools when in reality it was merely a matter of a quick pass through the right way then sanding!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes, cannot forget the moisture in the air hose when sprayng the second finishing coat which resulted in me having to sand it all back to the wood. Didn't know until that point that moisture builds up and that there is a value you need to open on the air compressor to purge this moisture build up. That is how ignorant I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However on the upside, have learnt alot about sanding techniques

Apart from those particular issues I know that I did a number of tasks the very long way, where unfortunately enlightenment did not arrive till after the event.

Have enjoyed the looks of some of the extended family when they have seen the table, and more importantly the gleam of pride in my wifes' eye.

Sadly yes I think I am hooked on this little pass time.

Its a gas fireplace which has a real flame effect. Go to www.livingflame.co.nz and you will see it in action.

Picture if you can - a cold winters night, mulled wine, and the only light being the glow from the fireplace. This glow reflected in my wife's beautiful eyes and as I gaze longingly into the pools of passion, across the table that I built with my own hands imagine if you will, my words coursing with love, as I say "I hope you are going to put a coaster under that wine glass"

    Pete,

Firstly the work looks stunning, the down side my wife was just looking over my shoulder as the picture down loaded. You can guess what the response was .

keep up the good work was it made from NZ timber or imported ?
It is better to have tried and failed than never tried at all.
