This is my first project, I have never made anything with wood before. This site has been a godsend to me, every little detail that i didnt know the answer to i found the answer on this site. Now im asking for honest feedback. I would like to know what you think and as my wife now wants a coffee table any other useful hints and tips would be appeciated.

Beautiful work, both functional and pleasing to the eye. The sight of all those reds lined up makes my mouth water. Keep the boss happy with lots of indoor furniture, chopping boards etc and new tool purchases will be a snap.

I find it difficult to believe that this is your first project as it is so good. It is much better than my first project. Just keep doing such good work.

If this is your first project you better stop now . As they say, "It doesn't get much better than this."

Keep it up, Cole, you will set the standard for all of us.

    Excellent first project

And how many bottles of Grange does it hold? ( If you have too many I could look after them for you )

    Damn good start

Many of us kick off using cheap timbers (pine etc) because we think good timber would be wasted on the stuff we're going to be able to make or the standard we can work to. My advice is don't be afraid to go find really nice timber. It's often much easier to work with, encourages good workmanship and results in a finished piece you remain proud of for many years to come.

Messing about with staining pine to resemble real timber is a mugs game IMHO

Also, think about finishes. Try Rustin's Danish Oil for one - it's dead easy to get a finish you'll be seriously proud of on a nice timber, and there's light years of difference between that and your average hardware store laquer.

Not a critism at all by the way - I think any of us would have been very proud of that cabinet, especially as a first project

Wow Cole, there's no way I would have tackled a project like that for my first effort. Even now I don't think I would expect a result quite as good. You've done a great job. I can't wait to see what you're going to come up with next.

    Cheers

    HI there,

looks like you've done a fine job - for more valid opinoins besides "looks good" you should post some detail on how you've done all the joints etc. looks like your on your way.

IMHO I think the glass cabinet bit at the top distracts the viewer from the beauty of the bottom section. If it were me I would build a second cabinet that held the glasses etc... dont get me wrong it looks great! I just think it looks a little unbalanced.

none the less SWMBO will certainly approve more tool purchases - I need to get mine to approve a dust extractor now! bugger!

    cheers
