    Default Queen size bed

    Hello,
I was busy before Xmas making a Queen size bed for a Goddess, and have only just managed to put some photos on the computer.
It was made to order, out of recycled timber, to suit an amazing house featuring lots of timber, apparently constructed by a boat builder. (That doesn't surprise me, some of the exposed beams outside are clad in copper sheet with copper nails!). I used silky oak for the framework, stuff I reclaimed from some garage doors, and had a fair bit of work filling old mortices and bolt holes. The design was to be simple, restrained even, minimum of decoration, moulding etc. The height was dictated to match an old ensemble without castors, which was considered the ideal.
I had a nice slab of red cedar sitting in the shed, which was a door prize from a Forum get-together some years back!! Some work to get it an even thickness, as there was a noticable taper in it: I ripped it in two and put it through a 300mm thicknesser before glueing back together.
Main head and foot board joints are through mortice and tenon, with wedges; the head board is a blind mortice. The rails locate on 2 thick dowels at each end, then pulled together by substantial allen head bolts going into housed nuts within the rail, resulting in a very stable joint which is demountable. I covered the bolt heads with square blocks pinned on, and although decorative, do look like through tenons!
The base is 16mm MDF (which the Goddess wanted, not slats) sitting on 50x30mm cleats. A cross-member housed into the cleats runs across at the sheet join, and has a 5th leg in the middle. All legs have rubber pads glued on.
I finished it with 2 coats of Danish oil, and am pretty pleased with the result. It fitted neatly into my station wagon for delivery, and the owner was ecstatic!!

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

Yeah I think it was donated by your good self, so thank you!! Just took a long time to come up with an appropriate use for it! The grain has an amazing figure and rich colour in the flesh.

    Cheers
