Excellent idea, Skew. The dowels would serve to stop the pieces sliding under the wedging action.

Is it somewhat limited in the size of workpiece? I.e. wouldn't a longish workpiece foul on the vise underneath the jig?

I guess if this was a problem you could use it clamped to the edge of the bench, and operating with a couple of clamps instead of the vise jaws...? Make sense?

I usually work with a maximum of only a foot or so of the piece projecting out of the clamp, over the top of the bench. Otherwise the piece is too far from the edge of the bench for comfortable working. The bottom end projects from the front. This is OK for lengths around 5'-6' long although it does give me something else to trip over.

On-site, I just clamp it to an end-wall or upright post which is actually easier to work around...

I honestly hadn't thought of that. I might have to make a more permanent one with coach-bolts & wingnuts to self-clamp. I usually make 'em when needed and later cut 'em up for other purposes, such as wedges, etc.

It'd make clamping it to the bench a bit simpler; less doodads in the way! Hmmmm...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Default Very late last word

    Hello forum,

It's been some time ago I participated in this thread.
We have been to Holland to renew our visa's and a lot has happend on Bali.

First I would like to thank you all for the massive respons on my posting. And the nice remarks and positive critisism are very much apriciated.

I've read that also the zig-zag chair got some attention (Rockler) .

The next project I will undertake will be the "famous" zig-zag chair, the Rietveld way ofcourse.

Derek and Zenwood were interessted in a measured drawing of the red and bleu. I will happily send them a copy.

By the way, if you design a project do you use some sort of CAD-program?

    See you.

    Kayu,

Yes, I use Turbocad, but AutoSketch and DesignCad are other possibilities; and are easier to learn.

Hi Kayu, I just came across your post of the red and blue chair. I love it. You've done a brilliant job and it looks just like the original. I don't think it's arthouse. I intend to have a go at it and the Zig Zag chair at somer time in the future.
    Cheers

There's one unanswered question in this thread: how are the seat and the back originally attached ? The dowels seem to stand up (and forward for the back) straight, so I assume you've drilled the holes at an angle ??

I'm sure it's easy to do with advanced equipment, but trying to recreate it originally, what would the simplest method be to attach both pieces?

You could try the book How to construct Rietveld furniture, by Peter Drijver and Johannes Niemeijer.
