    Talking Shadow Box

Hello all, just a quick one to show off one of my latest projects. I made this for my old man's birthday earlier this year. The frame is made out of Marbou with 2mm glass for the front. It is a complete shadow box and has MDF backing with a pine frame. This stain is just your basic tongue oil.

I managed to seal the frame so that it would keep out all dust and bugs and the like by using silicone. Had the desired effect and is completely air tight.

    Cheers

    Kris

Wow! well done. your father should be proud. by the way, if you like tongue oil, you'll love tung oil. Or... i dont know maybe you just have some very silent people walking around darwin. how do you squeeze the oil out of the tongue's?

Maybe you apply the oil with your tongue.

Thanks for the hints about tung oil guys. Up here in Darwin we hae very limited resources and it is up to us as individuals to come up with new and improved ideas on how to stain wood and the like. By simply grabbing a tongue and wringing it out certainly excretes just the right amount of "tongue oil" needed for a small project like this.... or maybe I got distracted when I was posting the original thread?

    Ha ha ha...

    Cheers

Good looking job you've done there Kris, with the appearance of the grain "flowing" around the frame.
    Keep up the good work.

    Cheers

Top effort, Kris. You've done a top job.

Your old man looks a fine soldier, by the way.

What type of timber is Marbou? As it looks a bit like Cypress Pine on my computer.

    Keep up the great work.

Sorry about that, I spelt it wrong. It is actually spelt Marbau, it is an Indonesian/Papuan Hardwood, normally used as floors.

Thanks for the nice comments, please feel free to add those comments to my reputation.

    That's great.
You've given me a great idea for my old man's 81st. He has medals and a King's commendation but they are all over the place. He'd love to have them all mounted with a picture of him in uniform.
    Thanks.

Adrian, if you like I could send you closeup pictures and dimensions. As an idea you might want to try http://www.naa.com.au
