    Default silky oak dresser

A solid silky oak dresser from Cairns, made by A.J. Draper in around 1937 going by a date I found on the mirror back. Beautiful quater cut grain throughout, top quality timber but funny they only nailed the drawers together, no dovetails...

Once covered in the japan black stain, couldn't see any grain at all! Finish was very bad after 70 years or so.

Stripped back completely and sanded, the top had to be run through a big belt sander to remove a deep stain, edge re-routed with a beading profile that didn't quite match the original but will do.

New handles, ply back and two drawer bottoms were replaced. It was finished with a couple of coats of minwax wipeon poly which was the first time I've used it, very happy with the results!

It is a matching dresser for one I restored a few years ago now, also posted it here somewhere.

    Hi Womble

Great reno job, it's such a nice timber
guess they didn't like it much back in the day.
Was that the original mirror? looks in pretty good nick.
good choice on the handles, the finish really brought
out the grain, and the color is v rich.
Was it a pinky color before the the poly/wax went on
i've got some dresser draws to finish soon, i hope they
come out the same as yours.

    happy days

Beautiful work, Womble. Sounds like you spent quite a bit of time on it, and the results are stunning!
