Default Spice Box - an excursion to the Dark Side

Here is my version of Steve Latta's Pennsylvania spice box, described in FWW #196. It is made in Tasmanian blackwood, with drawer-fronts of fiddleback Queensland blackwood laminated onto jarrah. The carcass is joined with hand-cut through dovetails. There is a cleat attached to the inside of the back which can be reached by removing the bottom drawer; this cleat enables the back to be removed, giving access to a shallow secret compartment, which is concealed by the top moulding. The finish is gelclear polyurethane; I would have preferred Minwax wipe-on poly, but my local Bunnings no longer stocks it

For a time, I was perplexed about how to safely cut the groove for the panel in the curved top rail of the door; my solution was to use my dado set to cut a 38 mm deep 1/4" wide groove in the rail. I then glued 1/4" thick pieces of wood into the deep parts of the groove at its ends. The rails of the door are joined to the stiles by 6 mm thick dominoes.

This piece may be my swan-song. I may have to give woodwork away, unless I can beat my susceptibility to fainting attacks.

A very fine piece of work Rocker.

You cant give it up. Get an apprentice. Their job can be to catch the chisels before they hit the floor.

Seriously, I hope you get it sorted.
    Cheers,

    Beautiful piece as usual Rocker

Hope those fainting spells go away, it would be a terrible shame to give up your work, for yourself, and us.

Good looking piece Rocker, esp. if you're serious about your spices! Sorry to hear about your affliction. Is that why you opted for Darkside on this piece, less chance of injury if you fell on a bench hook than a tablesaw?

    Take care,
