    Default Sturdee's cutting boards.

Just finished making a cutting board. Unlike others I've seen mine is a simple one to make as it's the same as many of the clients of the Men's shed that I work at has made.

They are made of a simple timber board on which parquetry tiles are glued on in and against each other in the pattern that you want. Then it's sanded and finished as required according to the clients abilities.

The board I decided to make is 480*320mm and the parquetry fingers are glued on a simple pine board. The pine back is sanded to 400 and then stained with a maple stain (on hand) and finished with three coats of Antique oil.

The cutting side is sanded to 800 and then finished with two coats of Ubeaut's Food safe plus oil.

Also last year I made a smaller one 300mm square with the back being an ordinary hardwood. The finish on this was WOP for the backand the top with vegetable oil.

As you can see this one has some wear but these boards can be resanded and refinished if they gets worse.

Both cutting boards were made as presents and now I have to make some more for ourselves.

    Enjoy.

    Default And some more.

Following on from the previous cutting board I obtained so more parquetry fingers and made another cutting board similar size to the first one.

These fingers are a light hardwood and different lengths so it created a totally different pattern. Similar finish to the first one.

Whilst on a roll I decided to try and make a small butchers block. This one is a learning curve and I made a few mistakes that I could still fix so it's not too bad.

Size is 320 * 240 * 40mm and the timber is European beech and jarra. I finally found a use for those of cuts cluttering up my workshop.

    Enjoy.

Beautiful! Thanks for posting and inspiring us to have a go at making one. Where do you get the parquetry pieces?
    regards,

I got the parquetry fingers from the Ringwood store of Perfect Timber Floors.

They are only in Melbourne but Google timber flooring in your state and you should find one.

WOP stands for Wipe on Poly which is a special type of poly that is wiped on with a cloth rather then brushed on. Many light coats over several days makes a good finish, without brushmarks, for the non painters among us.

There are many brands but I have been using the Minwax products, both the clear and the satin, to great result. These are available at Bunnings.

Minwax also make other products and I have been using their Antique Oil rather than Rustin's Danish Oil as it's easier, and takes less coats, to get a good finish. Again this is wiped on with a cloth. All Minwax products, apart from the WOP, is available by mail order direct from the importer.

BTW don't work for them, neither do I get a special discount for this, but I stumbled on their products by accident and have been happy with them since.

Default Some more butcher block style cutting boards.

Made another butcher block style cutting board and tried different sizes of blocks using scrap timber. The contrast in colour is not as good as I would like but it's good practice.

Although I made it in one large block I decided that I should cut it in to two and make smaller blocks and give both away as presents. Finish is two coats of Food Safe Plus.

I'm working towards a few good ones with nice contrasts.

    Enjoy.

    Hey

I'm inspired by the blocks and am curious to know where I could some wood from. Is there an online supplier or do Igo to bunnings.

    Thanks

Grant, I presume you are interested in the butcher style cutting boards. I do not get the timber from Bunnings, but use some of cuts that I scrounge from a furniture maker. Just need some small pieces in opposing colours that I cut to size etc.

I'm just starting to make another and if there is interest I'll take some photos along the way.

Thanks for the reply and info. I think pictures of your block would be great and complement the site nicely.

    cheers
