Default TV Cabinet Burbinga and Queensland Maple

A lowline TV cabinet using rough sawn slabs.

The frame is burbinga and the top and end panels are Queensland Maple.

The maple slab for the top was flattened with a router-sled set up. The smaller sections for the ends were flattened with hand plane and the thickness sander.

It was steady work but the main problem was squeezing the top out of the slab that narrowed at a couple of spots. In order to get the width I ended up with a couple of shallow sections on the underside of the slab.
With 50mm burbinga edge on the front the top width is 50cm.

    Default Part Assembly

The burbinga frames were cut to size and the end legs given a curved shape.
Dominos used for all the joints.
I only have a small supply of burbinga so the timber dimensions vary from frame to frame. This made the marking and routing of the dominos more complicated and I managed to get a couple in the wrong place. No longer visible fortunately.

Grooves were routed for the panels then everything sanded and given one coat of oil.

The end panels are 30mm thick Qld Maple. I created the tongues with a core box bit for form the raised panels.
The internal panels are Hoop Pine, about 25mm thick. I didn't want to use the good maple on the internal panels where it would hardly be seen.
All the panels were finished sanded and given a coat of oil.

The four frame and panels were assembled.
After the glue dried I cleaned up the joints.

The frames were connected with burbinga rails again using dominos.

Now the joints have been cleaned up and it will get a few more coats of oil.
Next to work on the Top, Base and adjustable shelves.

    Default More assembly

There is some really nice figure on the Qld Maple end panels which jumps out when the oil is applied.

I used brass shelf supports with brass collars for the adjustable shelves. I think the collars make a neater finish.

Plenty of clamps used for the final assemble.

Beautiful work (and wood). The sleeves for the brass supports are a good idea, nothing worse than having your holes start to elongate and your shelves sag.

    Default Top finishing

    Thanks for the comments.
The figure is starting to show up now that most of the cabinet has had a coat of oil.

I rounded the front corners of the top so they are a bit easier on the legs if you bump into them.

The top and bottom edges are rounded over. It gives the top a very solid look.

Sanded to #500 and given one coat of Livos oil.
The figure is looking good on the Qld Maple and I like the contrast with the red chocolate of the Burbinga.

The base has also had one coat of oil and it is starting to look like a cabinet.

Boards have been cut for the base.

I am looking for more boards to make another three shelves... Mal will make a delivery next week just in case I don't find anything suitable.

There are two drawers to make and I have some Qld Maple with good figure to choose from for the drawer fronts.
The back will be 8mm cabinet ply. I will rout recesses in the back for the three ply panels.
Them cut out big holes for all the leads.

    Getting there.

Love the contrast between the two timbers and that Qld Maple looks brilliant.

The top looks equaly impressive too.

What can you say, sensational. Cant wait to see the finished product.

    I like pretty timbers.

My plan was to use Tas Myrtle but couldn't get my mate to send any over from Tassie.

Boutique Timbers gave me some Qld Maple last year and I was impressed with the figure. It is an easy timber to work too. So I get Mal to regularly send me some figured boards.

A few years ago I convinced Trend to part with a fantastic Burbinga slab. I made a few cabinets out of it. It had great figure and the colour is really lovely.
Last year I found a few more boards. Same colour but not the great figure.

I am pleased the two timbers look good together.

Hopefully I will get it all together this weekend.

That is the most stunning figure I have seen in Queensland Maple and you have handled it beautifully with that Bubinga "frame".

    Super workmanship too!!!
