Some very cool design ideas there Ruffly: I like the way you've used the squiggles and birdseye together. The painted interior is a brilliant touch: the colour looks perfect.

I think it would look even better though with handmade wooden handles instead of the metal ones.

Looking forward to seeing its companion.

Hmm, I think you are right Zen, handmade handles would lift it just that little bit more. I wanted to use black handles originally as a tie-in feature with the birdseye, but couldn't get the shape I wanted.

Then I tried pine handles, but they faded away into the pine too much and you almost had to run your hands over the piece to find the handles. I decided on the soft gold handles as they tied in with the piano hinge and another bonus is that they lift/accentuate/highlight the gold colour in the birdseye more.

I guess this is where the Ruffly part now comes into play

Trying to ensure genuine rustic lives in pieces while building the piece using better methods of joinery. I suppose that is the real challenge now.

So how do you keep the rustic while improving the joinery work. Does rustic come from design elements, from the building element, or the look and feel of the timber.

I'm a tad confused. I would have termed the pine cabinet as rustic because it's got echos of the old washboard stand in it, particularly the top shaping. Or is that simply 'country'?

    cheers

Wendy, it's people like you that gives Bunning's timber a good name . Great job, and I like the design

I hear what you're saying Wendy. My question is: do you really want to be constrained by a "ruffly rustic" design aesthetic? It sounds to me like you feel like breaking out into more refined ideas, now that you have the skills. And why not? A squiggle here and there...letting the wood whisper...allowing honest imperfections, these could all be ruff-rustic elements of your finely-joined pieces.

It's like zen: when you think you have captured the answer, then you haven't captured the answer.

Dear Zenwood, thank you. You've voiced what I've been feeling and have been unable to say clearly.

Sigh! Constraints are just that, limiting and I am 'limited' enough with my skills and abilities considering the designs that I've started and had to put aside till I can complete them to the level of skill the design demands.

but when you can do everything, a lot of it becomes a chore instead of a challenge.

Just saw this. Wow. Very nice little cabinet.

I think the handles look great. I like the bit of order they bring to the chaos of natural timber grain.

When I worked in a staircase joinery years ago, the timber was mostly bland meranti. Every so often, you'd come across a piece with a nice bit of figure or an interesting void. I'd always put those bits aside - they weren't wanted for the stairs anyway. You can always find something interesting even in the most unexpected place.

    Congrats on the cabinet.
