    Default Toy box

Here is my first not-for-the-workshop project. I am not making the lid until the users are old enough not to slam it on their fingers. (That is, when I feel less lazy.)

Frame, front panels and side panels are from E. Maculata/Studley timber. Rear panels and bottom are pine T&G board I found on the nature strip. Darkside methods throughout. Finished with the host's white shellac and EEE.

Great Toy box Jav An idea for the lid, a few weeks back i made a toy box with a 1500 x 500 x 30mm oak top.... heavyyyyyyyyy. So to stop it slamin on little johnys fingers i used two 16kg gas struts that were way to strong for normal opperations and wouldnt close without mild preasure and some sprung catches to lock it shut. Without the catches it just wont shut as the lid just keeps on opening up. Worked a treat

Lovely box Jav. Very nice work. The reject timber has come up a treat.

Came across these from Lee Valley. http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/pa...48&cat=3,41427

Not sure if they are available in Australia, but might be a bit lighter weight than Lignum's gas shock absorbers, and keep fingers from getting pinched.

    Tex

PS let me know if you find something like that in Australia, as I plan to make a couple of blanket chests and would like something to prevent the lid slamming shut as well.

Tex, i hope i didnt give the idea that the gas shocks "weigh" 16kg`s thats their raiting, just like the lee valley ones at 45 pounds. By the way the lee valley ones look terrific

    Thanks everyone.

Lignum: Nice trick. I wonder if it cures laziness...

Tex: The Lee-Valley supports are really nice, but am not sure they are rated for the weight of the lid. I have found similar ones in several weight ratings in Rockler (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=410). In AU you can get lid supports from Elraco (http://elraco.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=2250). They are not as sleek as the Lee-valley ones, and I did not find any weight ratings on them. I would have tried them but they do not fit on my frame, and I do not want to attach them to the panels.

Dingo: Barbie wishes to thank you for the compliment.

Good work with the toy box, but... can you get you daughter to actually put her toys in it after she's finished playing?
