My TV Cabinet.
When my little boy was born last year SWMBO asked for a tv cabinet to be made to keep those little fingers away from expensive home theatre components. So here it is.
Its not overly beautiful, or ground breaking in design but it does what its supposed to do. As the budget (and time) were a bit tight this time round i decided to use Tassie Oak for construction. The main cabinet was made from veneered MDF and the rest from solid timber.
The main things i wanted were for the centre channel to be hidden, to have draws for DVD's to be stored and for the main cinema components to be behind doors. It had to be fuctional.
Surprisingly the hardest thing to decide on were the handles for the draws and doors. We originally wanted ring pulls but couldnt find any that we liked so settled for simple brass knobs. I think they work quite well.
Hope you like what you see. Comments welcome (even negative). We learn from our mistakes.
Thanks for looking,
Steven.

I dare say I haven't seen anything quite like it before, and that is not a bad thing. It certainly looks well made.
I don't know if I would have enclosed the TV as it seems a bit bulky.
Well done on the execution.

I like the concept and you have balanced it very well. For my own personal use I may have lowered the TV unit a little and decreasd the lower cabinet size. To me, a little top heavy. My youngest is 26 today, so do not have the inquisitive hands to deal with or the task of "child proofing".
A great job and everybody views things through different eyes.
Have a great wood working day!
JohnCleaning my glasses will not make me look any better,
But will make what I am looking at better.

Looks well/quality made to me, I agree with Boban a enclosed TV cabinet looks bulky... if your TV dies you will be limited on size of the replacement.

Looks good to me. Well done.

Hi Steven,
Well done I like it. A comment on the design if I may and please don't take offense but I think the drawers look a bit busy with the through dovetails above the terrific doors, a plain drawer front with black pulls would work better for me.
Cheers

Thanks all for the comments. Any views i get from others is always welcome as it can only make you better at what you do.
Boban, i considered an open top unit but SWMBO wanted it enclosed, something she has always wanted, so thats the direction i took. I'm hoping the low perspective of the photo's makes it look bulkier than what it actually is. It is only 1500mm high (chin high to me) so certainly is no sky scraper. That's my excuse anyway and i'm sticking to it.
I have to admit Mike that i just purchased a Liegh D4R (an exciting thing for me) so wanted to show off what it can do. So it was was through dovetails this time round. I agree though that plain fronts would have looked better. I just couldn't help myself!!
Again thanks for the advice, if anyone has anymore to add please do so. That's what this forum is for and the reason i joined.
Steven.

Well done you have made a real nice quality piece of furniture. I agree with the remarks about the dovetails. The piece is very fine and they are just a bit overpowering but I understand you wanted to try out your Leigh I would have probably done the same. I think you have done an excellent job.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

i hear what you are saying with the handles. It took me 10 days to build our entertainment unit but another 12 months before i found the right handles...

I love the doors - very nice.
A couple of suggestions from someone who's been through the toddler years several times over:
* you'll need some way of stopping the kids from opening the doors, once they realise that's where the DVDs go. With the knobs you've used, you could use a plastic strip that locks over both knobs. You'll find these at Bunnings. They look terrible, but work well!
* do the drawers have some kind of "stop" to prevent them being pulled all the way out of the cabinet, so they can't fall on the kids? Kids will do anything to get to their favourite DVD, and I can imagine the drawer being fully out.
With the drawers, I think I would have made the sides less deep, so that the DVDs poke over the top a bit. I think it would make the DVDs easier to get out.

Very nice job...the doors look fantastic. I agree about the dovetails, but also understand why they are there ...very impressive
It's nice to be me.
I'm the only one.

Thanks Allan for your comments.
The doors will get the treatment you've suggested or something similar. It's been suggested a couple of heavy duty rubber bands wrapped around the door knobs a couple of times might also do the job.
Regarding the draws. I thought of putting in 'stops' too late in the process, I was nearly finished and cursed myself for not thinking of it earlier. So i installed a magnetic catch (as used in doors) at the rear of each draw to act as a back stop and to give resistence when opening them. When i went to purchase them i spotted a set with 8kg strength magnets and thought these would act as a kind of safety for the young fella. Only problem is that they are so strong that i can practically drag the whole cabinet across the floor (it's on castors) by the draw knobs before they let go!!! Everybody proof you could say
I am now also finding that your suggestion of lower sides on the draws would have been worthwhile. The DVD's are a bit difficult to extract.
I tell you what, if the young tacker can get past the super strength magnets to open the draw AND get a DVD out, he deserves to be allowed to watch it!!!
Thanks again for your input.
Steven.

Magnets near CD's DVD's with strength enough to pull a cabinet across the floor
