Waldo's huge project
G'day,
After countless late nights with into the early morning hours, sitting in the lounge in Sketch-up and now having just having finalised the cut list I'm about to embark on my first commission.
It's a cabinet with bookcase as one unit and a matching wall mounted bookcase for a library. Primary timber will be spotted gum, with a secondary highlight timber to yet be decided.
Screenshots show what I'm doing, the model doesn't show the plaques in the cabinet doors, or anywhere else. Doors to the bookcase will be tempered glass with muttins. This won't be a work-in-progress per se as that'll take me too long and also to narrate each part. What I will do is simply take shots through the thing and just post up.
How long it'll take I'm not sure, but I am hoping if possible to have the cabinet/bookcase done in 8 weeks.

This sideboard done by Chris Rand and submitted to Finewoodworking has me thinking. It uses brown oak in the legs and apron and is similar in colour to existing furniture in the church that I'm fitting the library out for.
I was looking for a similar timber with highlights with cove beading in the doors/drawers and muttins. I like how the oak has been used and wonder if I should go down a similar path (design and timber is at my discretion), so, what timber is similar to the brown oak that won't break the bank that also has a lot of strength as it will be carrying a fair bit of weight in the apron? Or should I maybe use brown oak?
As a note I'll only be looking as far as Matthews Timber in Mitcham as it's handy to me.

You've got that right on all accounts Artme. Everything I've made so far fits into the heavyweight category. My only concern is Dj and his truck, otherwise I sleep soundly at night.

Nice big project Waldo.
I expect you have considered the load from a book case to individual feet rather than a continuous support skirting board. Neil (Dai Sensai) has similar as a wall unit and heavy too.
Contrasting timber will be impressive. I like to see the contrast of colours just in mulga for instance.Cheers

Yep I've factored all that in, that's one reason for the fifth middle lag in the back, I may also yet do a 6th leg in the front centre but set back so you can't see it.
