White Cedar and hardwood table - WIP
Hi everyone,
Thought I would start a WIP page for my next project.
I picked up a few nice pieces of White Cedar while up in Toowoomba for work a week ago and plan on using it with some reclaimed hardwood I have to make a hall table. I would like to keep the front edge of the timber as is and use its natural curve as a feature on the table. Not sure how this will turn out, one way to find out though!
Time to get busy.

Thanks for the support Christos.
Ha, thanks Tony yesI have started. Frustrating few days,..I call them Errol Flynn days as I seemed to ##### everything I touched! I am also wondering if I wronged a bandsaw in my past life, set the new Hammer up and on my second cut something happened and I stuffed a guide!
Have the top joined, legs cut and all ready for final sand. Just need to finish the front, rear and sides and its ready to glue.
Hopefully pictures on Monday,..might go sacrifice a goat to the woodworking gods to ensure adequate productivity!

I'm not sure about the goat sacrifice but burning some ebony shavings as an offering usually works. (The local nursing home hasn't noticed that some of their piano keys are a bit smaller)
How do you stuff a guide? Did you hit it with the teeth or something?
I actually got a few hours in the shed today. Used the hollow chisel morticer for the first time and cut some tennons with the dado stack.
Mortices are 16mm x 55mm, 50mm deep. Took about 20 mins to cut 8 mortices
I think I have a new favourite tool.
The tennons on the dado blade worked well too.
Ok, enough about my non-frustrating day, where are the photos? Those were the droids I was looking for.

White Cedar
What is the origin of the white cedar you bought. In the early days of Paulownia when it was being prompted as the 'money tree' the promoters were planning to call it 'white cedar'. Looking at the photos of your planks it has a look of Paulownia to me. Is it very light in weight ( approx half the weight of pine) easy to work.and on the soft side.

Thanks Tony,..I was burning something when I was trying to cut a bit of old hardwood! Not sure what it is with me and bandsaws,..well ok I do its me!
How do you stuff a guide? Quite easily if you are me!
What happened was I was cutting a bit of old hardwood, it was really slow, blade got hot to the point of burning the sawdust. The saw started making a noise that let me know it was not happy. Inspection revealed that the blade had pushed back and out of whack - also pushing the blade to the front of the wheels. Either the guide stopped spinning and the blade wore a gouge through it otr when the blade has moved it has gouged the guide.
I know I must be doing something with my adjustments, however when I set it up it seems to all be fine! Thankfully I dont need to touch it today
Whitewood, I just bought it in Toowoomba labelled as White Cedar, it is not that light - I would say definitely heavier than pine and not overly soft.

Well it's been a few months however I thought I should post some pix of the hall table that I just finished. I have been busy doing lots of other things, so unfortunately this has taken me a little longer to finish than hoped! Oh well all done now and time to move onto the next one on the list!
I have not used White Cedar before, however have been very happy with the way it has turned out. Easy to work with and some nice grain and colour. It's also a pretty good mix with the hardwood timber I used in the base IMHO. This is old housing frame timber that I collected from a local building site - so much better to use it rather than send it to landfill!
I should also mention that to seal the table I used the Livos oil that Angela from Livos Australia gave me at a local Expo earlier in the year. I will give an honest opinion on the product, I received a small free sample however I am happy to give an unbiased review!
I am a big fan of it. It was very easy to apply, I did mine with a wad and applied three coats. In between coats two and three I rubbed it back with 0000 steel wool and then applied the final coat. I am really happy with the finish, it has brought out the grain and character and added a bit of warmth to the timbers colour. I also missed a spot of glue on my final sand before oiling, it was very easy to sand back a small section, reoil and be none the wiser! I will be purchasing some more soon for my next project.
Oh almost forgot to mention. I used my Domino to make up the little cleats and matching slots to hold the top on. I used a large cutter 8/10 and made some slots in the rails of the frame. I usually make these 1.5 times the standard size. I then cut up some off cut blocks and added a smaller Domino to them to match the slot. I drilled a hole in the centre and they made a quick and easy cleat system!
Thanks for reading!

Awesome work
Was the sample kunos livos #244 oil?
Most furniture in the Bungendore woodwork gallery use this finish, as well as a lot of well known furniture makers. Iv'e been very keen to use this finish and will give it a try.

Thanks Andy- It is labelled Natural Oil Sealer Art # 244-002. I guess that's the one. I can see why it is popular!
Thanks Tony
