Default WIP Krenov inspired Display cabinet

    Hi all,

This is going to be a display cabinet mounted on a stand with a drawer in the bottom left hand side. The timber used is Fijian plantation Rimu, Black hearted Sassafras and Jarrah for the stand.
I think the drawer front will be plantation Kauri, to lighten the colour possibly with Rimu sides and with through DTs.
The finish is as usual, SO and friction sealing. There has been no wax added yet.
Dimensions are approx, 400 long x 278 high and 245 deep.

Pic 1 is just to show how the Domino can be set up to do mortises in the middle of a panel. You simply set the plate to its lowest setting, draw a line 10mm below where you want the mortise, then rout to the required depth.

Pic 2 is the inside of the cabinet
Pic 3 is the back after sanding but not oiled and
Pic 4 is the top after oiling and sanding.

    more soon

    Regards,

    Rob

    Looking good.
I like the choice of timbers and agree with the choice of a lighter coloured timber fro the drawer front.

What are you doing for the front?
Glass, doors with glass or solid Sassafras doors?

    Hi again,

Just a couple of pics of the stand. The legs are 40 x 40mm and 125mm tall. The rails are 42mm wide and 17mm deep. The two support stretchers are 19mm x 42 and are rebated 20mm into the frame. This is obviously a dry knock up.
The doors for the cabinet will most probably be Rimu frames with a panel of either Kauri or Sassafras.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Hiya Rob,

I like your choice of timbers, but especially like the shortened legs. Looking forward to your progress on this cabinet.

    cheers

    Hi y'all,

Just some pictures of the paneled doors mounted. I wanted to give the cabinet a feeling of width, so the vertical rails are short while the horizontals are long.
Wendy, I deliberated form some time on the leg set up and decided that I wanted a bench top cabinet. It boiled down to either 125mm as seen here, or about 1.2 metres. If I had gone with the longer legs, I probably would have used 50mm square, straight to about 150mm then tapered to 20mm at the bottom, to give a "leggy" feel. I also would have lowered the front rail to give a bigger gap between the cabinet and stand. I also would probably have tried to give a feeling of height rather than width, thus I would have made the vertical rails of the doors into the longer ones.
I still have some more to do before this is finished.

    Regards,

    Rob

Looks awsome Rob. Easly one of your best designs. If it was stretched out, it would make a sensational stereo cabinet

That looks great, very interesting design. Love the grain in the timbers too.

    ..and finally, with it's drawer.
The drawer is made entirely of Fijian Kauri. The corners are mitred and I may add splines of Rimu, but probably not. The finger hole was cut with a 32mm Forstner bit on a drill press.
All that's left to do now is tidy up the drawer edges, clean up the whole unit and set aside a day to apply EEE and Trad wax.

    Regards,

    Rob
