    Default WIP Merbau Chrissy Table

    Hi,
Christmas again and again I have to make a dining table. This one for outside. So.. Merbau, 2.4mx1.4m, twin pedestal. I bought the timber from Chippy's in Ringwood. Great place. People know what they're talking about, excellent timber and prompt delivery.
The slats are approximately 5mm (or the width of a domino apart (in theory) The whole deal is dominoed, using the new domi's for outside use and glued with Titebond III. The finish will be Interstain Natural finish.
Pic #1 Nothing gets done unsupervised!! This is the basic arrangement for the top and shows the template for the pedestals. You can also see the 10x50mm domis which will hold the frame together. The frame is 42x110mm Merbau.
Pic#2 The mortises for the domis (6x40mm).
Pic #3 The domis in place and some of the boards dry fitted.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Hi LGS,

Top job there. Will be ready for Christmas I expect with the help of Domino thingy, (oh to be so lucky).

Don't forget to show us the completed pictures, after you pass the final cat scan of course.

    Cheers

So here are the pedestals, which are not yet sanded. There will be a 190x32mm rail between the two, so I think the whole set up should be stable and strong. Pic 3 is the assembled top, clamped.

    Regards,

    Rob

Was going to comment on it needing a rail between the pedestals, until I reread the thread and saw 'twas gonna happen anyway, so I won't mention it...

It appears that the crosspieces the pedestals are attached to go through to the top surface, with the boards domi'd to each side? A different approach, but certainly solving any hassles with movement. That's going to be one niiiice table.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Herewith, the next bit.
The two pedestals are joined using a 190 x 32mm rail (690mm long) and three 10 x 50mm dominoes. I think I may use three screws counterbored and plugged as well, for added strength.
The three domino mortises were cut by measuring to the centre of each pedeastal and marking with a line, then marking another line 10mm to the right of the centre. This is where the rail is clamped. 10mm is the distance between the centre of the Domino cutter and the base. Then its just a case of clamp the rail at the line to the right and plunge the mortises. Dead centre!.
I now have to construct six benches to match. Four 1m long and 2 1.2 m long. I'm in two minds as to whether or not I should angle the legs for these by 5-10 degrees or to leave them straight. I'm thinking Shaker design, so probably straight.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Default Benches

    The benches.
Pic #1. Trenching the seat for the leg, using the Kapex set at a cut depth of 16mm. Tite Bond III for the glue up.
Pic #2. Installing the leg. (dry fit). I use Sachys Robertson SS square drive screws to attach the support blocks to the seat and leg. The support blocks are 190 x 190 on the two square sides and 45 degree angle.
Pic #3. The final bench, prior to finishing.

Here's some pics of the table all but finished. Just need to sand and oil the benches. The next photos will be of the table on Christmas day, decked out with food'n'all.

    Hi LGS,

    What Lig and Scally said.

Now that is what is called 'just in time' construction. Have a Merry Christmas sitting on your hard work.

    Cheers
