Thread: Aussie Domain name registration

Why restrict it to Australia? Most people are going to forget the .au anyway.

I use Namesecure. Have done for three years now and a mate was using it before then (recommended it to me). It doesn't host the site, just registers the name and provides a redirection to where ever your site lives. With mine, you type in www.richardspurling.com and you really go to bigpond, whereas twelve months ago, you went to senet - I was able to do the change simply by changing the target at Namesecure, didn't have to tell anyone anything because it's seamless.

That's one argument anyway. I'm sure there are others.

Thanx for the reg site. The site I want to reg has to be ****.com.au and they don't do .com.au. Any others you can recommend.

I used Melbourne IT. My first registration was for .com only, then I also took the name with .com.au and .net. This locked everything down so that an Aus. organisation could not take what I had initially registered at .com. I don't use their web hosting service as mine is with Optus, which I have a funny feeling is outsourced. The .com.au and .net all point to the .com site. The site is greataustralianimages.

Melbourne IT works for me too. Use it for all of my companies and clients sites.

I used Netregistry to do both of mine, much cheaper than melbourne IT.

My sites are hosted on unlimited-space.com as they were cost effective PLUS they gave me the facility to do sub domains e.g. I am currently setting up www.exclusiveprints.ausmade.com.au and will probably use a couple of other subdomains for various other product lines. One might be www.craftsupplies.ausmade.com.au for example, just thinking bout it for now.
None of the oz based web hosts I could find cater for subdomains.
unlimited-space.com are also an AU registrar and currently charge $49 (2years I think but don't hold me to that).

Haven't registered a .au name for a couple of years but they used to make you prove you had a claim on the name, like a registered company name or such. Maybe this is more relaxed now?

It was still the same last year when I registered both my domains.
but there are some alternatives with an au suffix that our IT folks may fill you in on.

I'm fairly confident on the information below as I do this quite often, but it is a very changing industry so take this as advice not gospel.

You still need a registered business name to get a com.au and the name has to be relevant. com.au are more expensive than .com so it is only worth going for if you want to demonstrate that you are australian.

All aussie registrations are through MelbourneIT but you can get it cheaper by using a third party. Be wary about signing up for a com.au for more than 2 years because it is not possible. Anybody who sells you a com.au for more than 2 years has only registered your domain for 2 years and will renew it after that. If they go belly up in the interim, then MelbourneIT will not honour your regsitration past the date that is registered with them.

I suggest that if you want a com.au you either go straight to the horse's mouth (ie MelbourneIT) or get it provided through the company who you will use to host the domain as they may offer it at a cost rate to get the hosting business. I would recommend http://www.webaccess.com.au as a host and domain registrar (if you go to their domain resgistration page, you'll notice they only register aussie domains for 2 years - so they aren't trying to rip you off).

Having reread Mathew's post, you don't specifically ask for com.au so you could go for some of teh others as echidna suggests, eg id.au which is for people. com.au is the most expensive domain in Australia, most of the others are cheaper.
