Bloody saws
Bloody saws .
The last few months I've had nagging thoughts in my head.
I want to start another saw or two or three and till the ideas run out .
But why in the hell ,saws ,they do one job and one job only ,they cut timber. Be it big or small ,hard or soft ,that's all they bloody do.
I could make a hundred other types of tools, a marking knife for instance maybe a mallet or two a fancy marking gauge possibly.
Or ,maybe start that box I've been meaning to make for the last 5 years.
Or a workshop stool.
Na, I just keep thinking about making a saw, it's getting to the point I would not even call my self a wood worker.
"Na mate I just make saws."
That always ends up with that funny look from the other person I know ,because a few clients have asked me what I do in my spare time and I get that funny look.
Like WHAT.
Now I know ,there are lots of other crafts ,interests that a very specific specialised.
But some of them have a nicer look to them.
Wood tuners for interest .
Or just not that percular.
Maybe a hobby jeweller who only does rings for interest.
A potter who does vases all day everyday.
Nut just saws for me.
But that's something you easily can put inside on a shelf.
I can not see a Matt handmade saw arriving on a shelf inside our home any time in the next 100 years.
So ,what drives the mind to be so focused on just one object.
Is it the desire to just keep improving on the one area trying for the ACME of saws.
If so how does ?
Is It something that you become familiar with regarding the tools and techniques needed.
What are other people's thoughts here ?
Do I have a sickness ,am I incredibly focused and driven( I think not on that one[emoji12]).
I'm trying not to see myself as some poor sick twisted soul lol.
Cheers Matt .
For clarity here ,once I had a life and even made some stuff with wood that was not a bloody saw.

Ummm,
It's obviously a bit if a sore point for you.
Matt's hobby:
He really saw something in it for himself.
Tried hard to get a handle on it but he's become quite cut up about it.
After setting himself to the task he is now concerned about not being able to rake it in.
Finally, having got his back up he is now more relaxed about it and happy with how it hangs.

It's not just you. This homemade tools and jigs section has been about 90 percent saws this past couple of years. Is nobody making anything else? Perhaps some subliminal vibe going around.

That's really quite amazing. I think if you want to make a saw - get to it. There's nothing at all wrong with it... Especially if you make a saw you cant easily buy... All you would have to do is make a good saw and you will have something you can't easily buy...
Just the other day I went through a similar dilemma... I needed a saw that cuts right at a clean 0.9mm kerf for setting guitar frets... Didn't have one. Had to think hard about stoning down the set on my pull saw.. Finally decided to order one rather than do that..
As for making my own stuff.. Yep. I made a couple router bases, a wooden hammer, a couple chisel handles (for my re-hardened chisels) and recently - my first small hand plane.
The nice part of making your own stuff is that you can make what you want - not just what they will sell you..
So... What are you waiting for... Get to it!

Matt
If you wish to diversify a little, have you considered a "See-Saw?"
