Brass Carvers Mallet
Hi Woodies and borers lol,
I have come up with a design for a mallet that will be a valuable edition to my tools. I have posted elsewhere some other mallets but was impressed with Mr Majors heavier style bronze head. I am not wanting to compete with that but rather try a technique of my own.
I have several pics that I will provide here and as time goes by shall up date others in stages till the final product is reached.
Well here goes and have fun! Please remember they are for my use but you are welcome to copy it but I take no responsibility for any misadventure! I'm sure that mine will be extra sturdee with years of use ahead!
Cheers Violincrafter

Violincrafter, This is going to be great.
2 questions
1. In the top picture the outer tube is 75mm. Is that a typo?
2. You have specified 3 X 300 grams lead bars. Is there really room for 900grms of lead? What do you think the over all weight will be?

Ammendments as they ocurr
Ammendment: Im working on a 50 mm diameter mallet presently. I will also construct a 75mm diameter one once the initial mallet is finished. Also there may be some changes in the design.
I may change it slightly as I contemplate various thoughts as I go. The final will be posted and once satisfied I will ammend the drawing. I have updated the technical drawing but its really conceptual.
I may in fact invert the main casing and use a brass plate to conceal the lead in it. As for the amount of lead this will be determined at the time of casting.
Mr Major yours are excellent and are quite Beautiful. Yes I do like tinkering a bit but its good fun,,,,sometimes. So far so good!
I will publish the final version soon!
Cheers folks!

You have WAAAAAY too much free time on your hands.
Better send some to me, ok?
But it looks very cool. Not for me, but still doesn't mean I can't appreciate it.

Mr schtoo
A very big lol Mr schtoo. I mean to say how long would it take to cut some pipe, solder and turn a handle? Well I guess it depends on who's doing it. If anyone is stressed in such a task then this might seem OVERPOWERING task. LOL.
Its very simple and easy to do BUT!!!?*###()*--- Maybe not for some. I won't post how long it takes to construct, but its less than a Samurai sword or a simple box. So anyway nice deep breaths if its to overwhelming! YOGA is good for you, up and down! In and out exhale, Hold 10 seconds etc
I dont mean to stress anyone but what you see is really very simple task.
Cheers

No, not that. It's just the big presentations you come up with for these new creatons.
That's not for me that mallet. Too flashy for my tastes I'm afraid.
But I would love to be able to find brass in those sizes, I haven't seen brass of any reasonable size since I have been here, save for a store a few hours away and even then, you really do pay for the stuff.
Hurry up and finish it, I want to see what it looks like!

Brass for mallet
Dear Mr Schtoo,
The brass is conventional sized tubing that is easily available. Although mine has a larger thickness to it should be available from merchants.
I see that you have no need for this sort of tool which is fair enough. But if you want to make it somewhere down the track you can produce tube out of flat sheet. As im sure you are aware just use { circumference = diameter X 22 over 7 or 3.1416 } for the formula to calculate a given circumference.
I use this to fabricate other things other than a mallet. I,ve used this to make a brass 5 litre "bonsai" watering can, Brass paint pot for a "touch-up" gun so as to enable 1 litre rather than 200mls etc. Tube is easily made by sheet material but ADDS to the challenge and tinkering abilities.
Mr Router your concept of mallets are very nice in deed. They are wonderfully natural and highlight the timbers youve used. At the end of the day they would hold up nicely to any woodworkers task.
Good stuff peoples!
I want to make one like Mr Routers as well!

I am amazed at your work, I think having you around this forum a lot of us will learn a great deal.
Thank you for your kind comments regarding the mallets, looking forward to seeing the end product.
I will also turn a woodcarvers mallet, a lot of the guys here rave about them, just waiting for a suitable size offcut to butcher .You can never have enough planes, that is why Mr Stanley invented the 1/2s

Mr Router M
Thankyou for the nice words! I have learnt a lot from many others here in this forum! Some of it is very new to me because of the scale, size and scope of work carried out.
Your chisel are nice work! I refurbish some myself but also make some from silver tool steel or just a plain old screw driver heated, beaten flat, grinded and shaped. From that point the thing needs hardening and tempering. Yes! they do hold their edge nicely.
For guys with chisel work I'll post a pic of a strop that is very handy to have. I,ll try and get a graphic up! Its easy to make and maintains a nice sharp edge.
This took less than i thought heres the graphic
Till then Have fun!
