Default Chainsaw mill for short logs

The Pics tell pretty much all with this one.

#1 shows all the bits that make up the mill. I made it like this so it could knock down and fit in a station wagon.

#2 shows the short horses that get the base up to a reasonable working height.

#3 show the main part of the base (part of an old x-ray machine found in a skip at work)

#4 small C-section legs to support the rail.

#5 cross pieces to hold the log.

Default Chainsaw mill for short logs II

#1 shows a short log in place. Using a standard rail on top of such short log would be difficult. The log is held in place by adjustable clamps that ride on the cross pieces.

#2 shows the rail on which the chainsaw rides

#3 - all done and ready to cut

    #4/5 some other views

Default Chainsaw mill for short logs III

A couple of close up views. The second one approximates the driving position. For most logs the milling height is such that ones back can be used to put a a slight downward pressure to move the mill along the rail.

I only had time to put the thing back together this afternoon and being Sunday I avoid using the chainsaw to protect my reputation with the neighbors. I did fire it up last saturday (pre the horses and paint job) and it seems to work fine. I tried uploading a picture of the saw in action but the attachment upload system seems not to be working.

Anyway's - here is a picture of it in action from another source.

The log selected in that picture demonstrates just how awkward a shape the gripper system can hold.

    Cheers
