Default Turn a drill press into an oscillating spindle sander.

19756473_1164690550301623_8190982911058463200_n.jpgSorry not the best photo, I'll try and get some better ones tomorrow. I've basically taken a surplus ryobi drill I had lying around and gave it and a wiper blade motor to my wife's uncle who is a bit of a magician when it comes to mechanics in general. He's stuck them together and it actually works! Now I just need to make a box for it but I'm finding I have to take my time and try and think around corners to insure I allow for everything. more pics and details tomorrow.

    I'm watching!

its given me a good idea to mount mine next to lifter in the router table.

that big adjustable surfece is exactly what I need.

That's a pretty good idea but there is a slight problem with using some of those 12V motors in an enclosed space... they need airflow to cool them. My solution was to fit a 12V fan from a computer power supply (the power supply may be dead but the fan is usually good and computers are common enough in Council clean-up piles) feeding air onto the motor via a piece of flexible duct.
Actually, it's not just a pretty good idea....It's a brilliant idea!

I like the idea, but I'm not sure how long the presses bearings would last. They're not exactly designed with lateral loads in mind.

But I don't imagine you plan on selling it for commercial/industrial use...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Good point, luckily I've only invested $30 in to this so...The experience was worth that, I intend on making many of Matthias' machines but this was a nice simple(My part at least) build to ease me in.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but this is how I did it.

Edit, these pics were in the process of converting it.......I did tidy it up once I got the linkages sorted.

On my "To-Do" list is a system similar to Bedford's set up. I have a $30, 240 Volt motor that gives 30 Rpm. The box on the Drill Press Table will be tiltable (I have just invented a new word) and have dust extraction below and hopefully on the top as well. Completion date....some time
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Bedford, may I ask where you obtained the 2 fittings each end of the threaded rod?
I also have an identical DP just begging to do this conversion on

I got them from Bearing Wholesalers but any of the bearing places would probably have them.

IMG_2811.jpgIMG_2813.jpgWonder if I could attach a fan to the bottom of the pulley to cool the motor down?? it's not really facing the right direction though...
