    Default drill press table

I want to make a table and fence for my very old and very sturdy Tough drill press. The existing cast iron table is very flat and heavy but round and quite small. Less than 300mm dia.

I am thinking of a table about 450mm x 600mm with 2 T slots to secure the fence.

What should i make it with? I thought perhaps 16mm MDF capped with 3 mm ply. 19mm wide slots routed in the MDF, then the ply glued over the top to form the T slots. Would all ply be better? Would aluminium Tslots be better?

I would like this thing to be CHEAP , but i do want it to work.

I made mine out of Malemine, pretty much as you described and it works fine.

I had you use 2 layers to raise the table away from the table height adjustment handle. I also routed a small square to allow me to replace the centre of the table as it wears out.

This isnt mine but its pretty much what I came up with...

How much do you want to spend?

I saw a drill press table at carbatec with a fence with stop, dust extraction connection, rails with hold downs and a removable insert for $99. I don't know how much you were looking to spend but I reacon that's a bargain and i'll be getting one when I finally get a drill press.

If you were looking for a real basic design, you could go to Mr Ply and Wood and get offcuts very cheap. Then you can go to McJings and buy the hardware.

    Thanks Joez

Melamine might be the way to go.

    Thanks Andy

That does look like good value - especially when you consider the T tracks, bolts, knobs etc. would probably cost $30. I still like the idea of making my own - usually I make my own, it doesn't work too well, then i buy the real thing. I never learn.

    Thanks Bob.

The aluminium angle is probably a better idea than timber for the fence. The cut out for the chuck is good too.

I made mine from 35mm Spotted gum planks (3). This pic is before I added a Woodpeckers DP3 Fence (excellent stability, but remarkably, no T-Track provision). After that I replaced the drill stand with a more elaborate gizmo from Wabeco in Germany (via China as I've learned). The 10mm dog holes work really well, and are surprisingly strong - I doubt you'd get that with MDF.

Make your own Avery, you'll get a better and more flexible result. It will allow you to make all sorts of other bits and pieces for it. Having a couple of drill stands just behind the column is crazy convenient. I only use one 10mm doggie post in each so that I can spin them out of (or indeed into) the way. I have a whole bunch of different clamps and fences that I made for this rig. Many have been superceded, but apart from being fun, making clamps gives you (me anyway) a great system.

    Cheers, FF
