Thread: Hammer Time.

On the woodwork side I need to get some Osage Orange to make the hammer handle.



You will notice the orientation of the grain is quite important to allow the whipping effect of the very thin shaft without breaking.

The timber also needs to be strong and flexible as well as pretty and take a fine finish.

What dimensions do you need for the timber Dale?

Ive got some Osage Orange here in logs that I've yet to mill up

Working on the handle layout.

So 240x40x30mm but the grain originatation needs to be right.

Added some file work to the face for fun.

They can come in any color spray paint ya like Matt, or natural silver, oil blackened.

I actually sold one of the dog face hammers above today to a guitar maker I bought a post drill off, and he started following me on instagram.


Started Ted making some gravers to use with the chasing hammer. Only one is actually ground at this stage.

Made from some 10mm mild steel bar and tipped with whatever small bits of HSS I had. You can see my very poor first attempt at hammer engraving in the background.....Yes I have a long way to go.

There is at least one member of the forum who knows actually knows a lot about these little hammers and gravers, an it ain't me.

Ok I'm calling this one done.

Jarrad wedge slit with copper wedge.

Dale that hammer looks fantastic, as you know we once had a little talk about metal chasing.
If I ever get around to it I might ask for one made lol don't hold your breath tho.
I know you especially source the Osage orange timber for the handle.
And I understand why!
But I'm sorry and I'm going to be brave and stand up for myself, I don't like the timber colour at all.
Shaping of the metal head,handle design and shaping,10 points no questions asked.
I just can't get my head around a yellow handle.
It might be that my child hood was spent being carter around in a bright yellow kommbie van who's knows.
It should have been gloss black and slammed on the Tarmac
But my parents wouldn't listen.

Even if I don't like yellow handles [emoji12]

That's fine Matt. The Osage will darken and brown off with exposure to the UV in sunlight. I got it for its properties not its color.

This is after five days in the sun, I left two face down and the other two face up. Will upgrade with a pic after two weeks.

How does it feel in the hand?

Feels awesome. I had to walk to the chemist today to get ma pills. Walked there and standing at the counter before I even realised I was still fiddling with it. Can't leave it alone.
