    Default Home made bobbin sander, 12 volt power question

    19756473_1164690550301623_8190982911058463200_n.jpgHi, I had my wife's uncle make this up for me quite a few months ago, it's basically a smaller drill press, flipped upside down and a 12 volt window wiper motor has been added to the handle so it will isolate. The question is, what sort of transformer style pluggy thing do I need to run the wiper motor? I honestly can't remember what he told me to get but he seemed pretty relaxed about it but, when I went to the electronic shop(s) to get one it was like this big thing ( I received all these warnings about it heating up and many other issues so I didn't end up getting one. Basically, it's just a standard 12 volt window washer, and I need to get the correct plug so it will run safely and not heat up. Can some of you electronic experts give me some ideas as I really need this sander up and working yesterday. Thanks.

    Go and ask your wife's uncle.
    Nothing too technical here. 12 volts DC.
    Your car battery will work it, or a simple 12v battery charger.
    Just get the wires connected the right way around or it will run backwards.

    Would not use a 12 charger. Old computer power supplies are a good cheap (free usually) source of 12v, 5v and a couple of other voltages.

    You need to know how many amps it draws at full load. There may be a nameplate with details on the motor.

    Wiper motors are typically 40-50W so you will need a power supply that can deliver about 4A but to allow for overload probably shoot for 6A
    his rules out a basic wall wart. As Pete57 says an old PC power supply should be able to supply this current.

    Whatever you use a fuse in line with the power would be a good way to prevent it drawing too much current.

    The fuses on the gismo can be replaced to suit the motor

    If there is nothing about the max current mentioned on the motor you should work backwards. Run it under some load and measure the current and then replace the fuse to suit you max load.

    Thanks all, I ended up getting a laptop adaptor, 6 amp and it has a switch to choose your output. It works a treat. cheers.
