Default Home made wooden Mallet - Made from Rimu

what started out as an off cut off wood I was using to tap some dowel joins together while making the sides of a rustic style food storage bin I am making from Rimu which is a timber that is native to New Zealand and the lengths of timber I bought were old wall studs that I saw advertised. Any way my beloved partner came out to see what I was up to and she saw me using that block of wood to tap the joins together and she said why not put a handle on it. After she left I decided to cut a mortice into that block off wood using a 12mm spade bit to bore some holes so I could get the jig saw in there to rough out the mortice and then tidied it up with a chisel while making sure I was still going to get a tight fit the handle was fitted with the aid of a hammer and I had myself a wooden mallet for using to tap joins together as well as use on my chisels instead of that 20oz claw hammer of mine. So here it is handle and head both made from Rimu and oiled with boiled linseed oil

Beautiful piece of timber. Almost a shame to put a ding in it when putting the mallet to use. Looks like you have been a victim of the 'sideways fairy'.

Yeah That bloody sideways fairy I need to shoot the bugger when I get a chance to lol. Rimu is beautiful looking timber it was mainly used over here for building houses for many years as well as cabinet and furniture making so when I see recycled rimu come up for sale I am going to try and grab what I can. I only intend to use the mallet for light work just to tap joins together and the odd bit of chisel work where heavy hammer blows are not required.

    Default Gentle Persuader

    Lovely piece of work.

Rimu is fairly rare this side of the ditch, but my initial reactions was that rimu was bordering on being too light and too soft to use in a mallet.

Perhaps you can address future work in terms of "Yield to this gentle persuader, oh stubborn task, or I will resort to the 20 oz claw hammer!"

    Nice.

It actually does a good job i mainly use it with my chisels as well as giving the wood a tap to mark where to drill when using those center points so my dowel holes line up

Nice looking job Skilsaw but I have to agree with Graeme.
I turned a carvers mallet from rimu a few years ago but, even the gentle taps on wood handled gouges soon wrecked the head.
BTW, just had our winter wood delivered and found a couple of nice billets of rimu among the mixed pine and gum. It pays to check your woodpile!
    Cheers,
    Pete

Hi Pete all my rimu is from old wall studs/framing from demolished houses so the only stuff that goes in my wood pile is the bits that have had notches cut in them or angles cut in the ends even the scraps will be used for something if I can get away with it, I have got a thread in the box making section for a rustic style potato storage bin that I am making from some of the rimu I have got.

Just make sure you check for nails!
BTW How did you get on with your bid for the Stanley router plane? I picked up a nice one from TradeMe only a month or so back with everything intact.
    Cheers,
    Pete

I got outbid at the last minute and while i was at bunnings of all things so here i was standing in line at the checkout cursing and swearing when i went to try and get one last bid in and the auction closed this one had everything intact as well. There is a marples one on there now but too many parts missing. However i did pick up a stanley combination plane on my way home from work that i won an auction for $40 i just have to get extra irons off ebay for it as it only had one iron.
