Light-Side alternatives to the shooting board
As an Enlightened One, that is, as a woodworker who likes to do things the easy way, if possible, I have never felt the need to build a shooting board. If I want to square a long-grain edge of a board, I use a jointer; and if I want to cut an accurate mitre, I use a mitre sled on the table saw. See http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=12493
Today, though, I thought for a time that I might be forced spend a day or two making Derek's shooting board, since the tapered workpiece that I wanted to mitre could not be mitred on the mitre sled. That is, until I slapped my head, and remembered that I have a Kreg mitre gauge that would be ideal for the job. See the attached photo.
So, as far I am concerned, I am happy to assign the the shooting board to to the same category as the shoulder plane, a tool for those who like to do things the hard way
Lights the blue touch paper, and stands well clear.

No; it is a Jet dating from the time just before they switched their colour to white.
