Yet another mallet!
Here's a mallet I made this afternoon, for a mate's birthday on the weekend. The head is spotted gum I think, from an old painted verandah post, and the handle I turned from recycled silver ash. I intend to glue a leather and a felt face to the head, to be used as an assembly mallet, so the insistent gum vein showing on the face won't be an issue!
I found the silver ash rather splintery to turn along the grain, but the little bit of end grain I did went really well. Its pretty old and dry. Also I'm not a very good turner, so can't work out if its technique or poor tool sharpening!!
cheers,Andy Mac

Okay I'll be honest, the handle is hideous. The head looks good though

I think hideous is a 'leetle strong' - I think the light colour and fancy-ish profile makes it look a little on the "light weight side. Other than that it looks pretty serviceable.
I've made a couple of mallet and used them a lot more than I thought I wood! I'm thinking of making one with a slightly rounded face for striking large flat wooden surfaces - I'm finding the corners of the dead flat faces can mark a flat surface. Could be fun turning a curved surface.
On another score leather and felt sounds like a good combo. Cork is another one to consider.

I'm with FC even before I read his post. Don't like the handle sorry. It should be soft curves.

Hi Andy,
I think it looks fine, the shape should fit the palm nicely, and looks like it
wouldn't slip easily.
The angles on the faces look pretty well right as well.
Nice job, you friend should be pretty happy.
Regards
Ray

Hi guys,
Thanks for the feedback.
I'm not always a fan of the overly fancy either, but I modelled this handle on another I made quite a few years ago. It was a relatively small mallet, and I reach for it in preference to the many I have at work. It does seem to fit my hand better than most, and the little finger sort of hooks into the end well. Hopefully Kev will find the same!
Cheers,Andy Mac
