    Default MidgenFang Sneak Preview

Since I have a ton and a half of reject hardwood cluttering up my garage at the moment, I thought the best way of getting rid of it was to use it up!

Here's the first project, we might need E Maculata to identify the species though, the sole is from the floor pack, the body from some structural timber!

I know it's not finished, but thought I'd post the pics now, because it's quite nice in its current form, and I can't make up my mind how to finish it so thought I'd ask!

This is a high angle (60°) block plane, and I am waiting with some anticipation for the package from Lee Valley which contains the $5.00 blade . The oddish shape is designed for comfort ,( but we'll go into that after the official release) and it's not as bulky as it looks; see the comparison shot with the Veritas Low Angle block plane.

Final fitting of the blade should only entail a careful adjustment of the mouth, and if all goes well, we'll be planing!!

What to finish it in though???

Thanks to Major Panic, I am going through my NC lacquer phase, and that will be quick and easy, but the other options are: Danish Oil and UBeaut Traditional Wax , Some other stuff, or just UBeaut Traditional Wax. Currently it has one coat ofUBeaut Sanding Sealer.

Maybe I should just conduct a poll???

    Cheers,

    P

    Looking good Midge.

Of course, you're a totally lost cause now

I must say though, I think you should have gone for a jointer as your first effort.

    (Just kidding)

Greenie for Midge!!!! I think the name deserves a greenie of its own, but it won't let me do that.

By my calulations a ton and a half of timber should give you about 1257 more planes.

Did you build this off a plan?

Where does the roll of sticky tape go?

I see you made a pointy stick too, well done you! What's the lump on the other end for though

I love the shape: just want to get my hands on it.

Thanks Chaps, but no takers on the finish?

    Looks like lacquer it is.

I'll answer questions once the blade arrives, (and I can work out how to fit the roll of sticky tape in).

    cheers,
    P

I don't know how rugged it will be as a finish on a sticky tape dispenser but I am a recently converted fan of 3 coats of UBeaut Sanding Sealer and a coat of UBeaut Traditional Wax. Easy to apply, easy to maintain and looks fantastic. Pictures soon...

Terry Gordon recommends Linseed Oil for his planes (and mine, coat once a year), and just flicking through "Making and Mastering Wood Planes" by David Finck turns up bugger all about about applying any finish to his planes.

I like to hit the sanding sealer with Tripple E before the wax coats.
