thats it, Ive been inspired! Once I finish those chisel handles I think I'll be indulging in a bit of plane making also.


Oh yes and when SWMBO asks what I'm doing, I'll just have to blame you violincrafter (and refer to your multiple amazing posts).

Still waaaaay too much free time on your hands. I already suggested you give some of it to me!

What did you use for the bulk of the body? If it was rosewood, I prolly would have been inclined to use that as the sole rather than the maple. Yes, maple is hard but there's a heap of other stuff out there that makes hard maple look like plasticine.

I made one recently, and used a 10mm pin with an ebony wedge. I won't be inclined to do that again, the wedge gets beaten up pretty severely in a short amount of time. I'll make them all from steel from now on. Something for you to chew on there. I know lots of people use a smaller pin and wooden wedge, but not for me anymore.

Good luck with it, and if you go with a wedge, don't forget to have somewhere to whack it so you can pull out the blade and for adjusting it. A nice brass strike pin just ahead of the mouth sounds like your cup of tea.

Geez. I almost feel like I have to catch up...

Ive started collecting nice peices of different wood for saw handles. Gonna give them a go. My hands are too damn big and I can rarely find a saw (for a decent price) that doesnt give them the squeeze.

The designs are just basic presentations that I made . They may look involved but didnt take much effort. I was using macromedia FLASH mx professional today to try out some *.swf presentations. I will try and post some for your enjoyment. Well just want to give a bit of "dazzle" here and there! Mr Wood L you can do these easily Im sure.

Are you interested in design drawings? If you have anything you would like done I could try and help you so long as I can do it!

With anything it takes time no matter what, but thats the enjoyment of getting a final result. There are many in here who have great talent! So please have fun with whatever you do!

The base plate of rock maple is to eliminate wear and tear to the expensive rosewood and can be replaced without to much fuss. Im undecided whether to use brass plate as a further lining but as with the rosewood dont want to leave blemishes on light timbers. Remember treat your tools delicately and with respect!!! lol OUCH! Who said that? *90$$%%%!!!@@#++

Ah, Macromedia. Curious is all. Always looking out to learn new things, but right now it will have to wait. Going into exams next week.

I think im going to use a solid brass piece for the wedge piece which will be engraved and then hightly polished finish. The plate above is not polished and will come up superior to this.

Got the brass back plte engraved! Lookin good so far. Making some other specialist tools for inlay, marquetry, carving and router jig applications + hole and circle cutters.

Got the mini jack semi complete but looks very workable. I'm going to engrave the brass wedge piece and add some extra inlay work to it.

The brass wedge is not polished nor is the adjusting nut. I'm undecided to inlay the adjuster nut with some exotic ebony or rosewood!!!lol

The side of it may receive some brass diamond shape features or mother of pearl. Tried a run with it on some timbre and it "cuts like a knife on a razors edge.

This has been some fun to do! I like it and works very well.

Violincrafter, I'm near finished building a small brass block plane (which I will never post a picture of after seeing yours).
I haven't been able to find and adjuster knob that I'm happy with.
Where did you get yours from?
Is the adjuster in the thumb plane the same?

Violin crafter....I can see one little problem with your work of art miniature planes.

You see, an average luthier like myself is going to buy and use one of your beautiful planes to build an instrument.....but then discover that the finished instrument looks a lot less exciting than the planes used to create it!!

Of course I guess theres a positive aspect also. Using one of your planes is going to force me to produce better instruments!
